That’s definately a trick some makeup artists use - a darker foundation and then blend it in.
But you can also get bronzers that are powdery which do the same thing. I actually want to try the darker foundation trick once my bronzer is all done.

That’s actually what I do. Since I’ve had issues finding a bronzer that was not too dark, too orange, muddy, or super shimmery, I decided to just use MAC Studio Fix Powder in a couple of shades darker than my normal shade. I’m NC15 and use NC30 as bronzer and for contouring purposes. I’ve tried quite a few bronzers and that seems to look the most natural.
