blow dryer

How bad’s a blow dryer for your hair and how often should you be/not be using it? I pretty much use it almost on a regular basis after shower.

However, my hair has become very dry and lifeless.

Re: blow dryer

Blow dryers (when used on the heat setting) do as much damage to hair as do other styling products.

When you establish a routine of using such products, you should counter it with a nourishment routine. Like deep conditioning once a week or every two weeks....whatever suits your hair needs.

Another good thing is to get into the habit of tying your hair up in a style that you like so that on a particular day or two you don't need to use blow dryers or irons to style. This method gives your hair a much-needed break too.

Re: blow dryer

Its takes all moisture out of hair and leaves damaged, brutal and burnt hair,
If you wanna dry them up, use very low or no heat…heat also damages the roots,

Re: blow dryer

what do you mean by deep conditioning?..using deep conditioner?.. or is there a way to do it? also do you know whats “oil conditioning” and how can one do it? don’t tell me its plain oiling the hair.

Re: blow dryer

yes...I mean using a deep conditioning treatment. The kind that you apply to your hair and then wrap your hair up in a towel soaked in hot water.

I don't know what you mean by "oil conditioning".....I can only assume it is referring to "hot oil treatment" or just plain applying oil to the scalp for a massage.

Re: blow dryer

^ Best defines the quality and condition of my hair. :(

The reason why I blow dry my hair on a regular basis is because I don't like wet hair. Since I'm usually out at school or doing other stuff, I usually end up taking shower in the evening and I must dry my hair before going to sleep, otherwise my sinusitus related problems kick in.

Muzna, thanks for the tip on deep conditioning treatment. I've never really looked into it. I suppose I should pay a visit to Shoppers Drug Mart and find out more about it. Is there any particular product or store you'd like to recommend for it? Also, like I mentioned earlier, the purpose of blow drying my hair on a regular basis is because I can't really sleep with wet hair because of health reasons.

Re: blow dryer

^ ...try taking a shower earlier in the evening..give it a couple of hours for your hair to dry... that way you won't have to go to bed with wet hair...

i'm guessing you have thick and/or long hair ...it takes it a while to dry out completely?

Re: blow dryer

Quotes from an old magazine, I think the rules are still ok:

  • don't use an appliance over 1200 watts

  • use the diffuser attachment to spread the heat

  • keep the dryer moving

  • allow your hair to dry naturally as often as possible, using your hands to create shape and lift roots

Personally, I like to use mehndi once a year, actually it's better to use it more often. It's very healing for the head and the roots of your hair, beause of that your hair starts to shine more too and good oils [like 100% coconut oil] helps too.

Re: blow dryer

Mehndi is horrible for your hair. I read somewhere that it toally dries out your hair. I have it at home its this beauty book with tons of tips. I tried it once too and it completely dried out my hair. It was really really reallyyyy!! bad!!

Re: blow dryer

Sadiyah,

you should take care of hairs, assuming you have long and thick hairs.
Either take shower in the evening or free in time, or use a shower-cap if you have less time to dry them up.
Even using hot water directly on roots (skull) damages the hair quality and also burns hair cells that result in change of color to rusty and after that gray or white!

Use conditioner, and Dabar bio-amla oil, that will give life back to your hairs.
Plus use Vitamin-E capsules daily, and u will see positive change in hairs, skin, and face!

Fees: 125 Dollars, we accept cash on credit cards as well!

Re: blow dryer

I thought I'd clarify that I do not have long or thick hair.

Re: blow dryer

If you find your hair is drying out too much, try this:

Heat up some olive oil and put it all over your hair. Make sure to rub it into the scalp and ends. Warm up a towel in the microwave and wrap it tightly around your head so that the heat is trapped within the towel. Leave it like that for half an hour. I did this a few times with my hair and I noticed a difference.

You should also use a good shampoo and conditioner, specific for your type of hair and blow drying needs. I use Joico ... it's a bit expensive, but it works well for my type of hair. Keeps it nice and soft.

I tend to straighten my hair so I use a moisturizing straightening lotion after washing it before drying it. It helps protect the hair from the heat of the dryer and straightenin iron that way.

Re: blow dryer

i just towel dry my hair flipping them upside down. i was blowdrying like once a week in college and my hair started losing the shine. I'd rather have shiny wavy hair than straight dry hair. if you moisturize and oil your hair regularly then you dont need blowdriers, straightners. just use a good leave in product like a good quality mousse (if your hair is fine and flat) or gel (if hair is thick and frizzy) to maintain a shape. and for some reason my hair goes straight in winter and wavy in summer ...

Re: blow dryer

It's the humidity that causes waves SD. The same thing happens to me when it rains or during the summer time.

Re: blow dryer

I never blow dry my hair, unless theres an emergency, hair become so lifeless and dull by using a dryer

Re: blow dryer

Mehnaz, I think I use olive oil once in a blue moon. I suppose I should be more regular and I'll definitely give a try to the olive oil and towel tip that you've given. I haven't really been particular about the shampoo. However, since it seems to be getting more and more dry and lifeless everyday, I feel I should do something about it.

SD, I was told towel drying method makes your hair frizzy, so I gave up on it b/c of that.

Btw... would any of you suggest not using the blow dryer on a regular basis or would it be alright so long as I use the shampoo and conditioner to suit my needs as well implement a few other tips provided?

Re: blow dryer

sadiyah yes blowdrying is bad for your hair if you do it on a regular basis. shampoo and conditioner can only protect your hair to a certain extent but if you expose your hair to heat all the time then eventually they will lose all their life and also the constant pulling of hair from roots while drying weakens them. unless you are blessed with extra thick, extra strong, healthy hair that can take the heat.....all hair are not created equal :(
If you use a good frizz ease product after towel drying (when hair is almost all dry) then your hair shouldnt get frizzy. dont yank the towel too hard because wet hair is very fragile.
or you could put a little bit of oil in your hair before a regular shampoo and see how that helps in reducing the frizz.
Also When i was blowdrying regularly in college i noticed my hair would look frizzy everytime i skipped the dryer....thats a bad sign of hair getting "used to" the blow dryer....make a pact to stash the damn thing away for a month and go natural....i bet you'll start appreciating the real texture of your hair.

Re: blow dryer

SD, I'll give towel a try again. The reason for using blow dryer on a regular basis was to avoid getting sick (cold-sinus) due to sleeping with wet hair.

No, I'm not blessed with thick hair. My hair has become totally dry and lifeless. :(

Re: blow dryer

Sectry, I became ganja because I used to use one everyday. Too much of anything is bad.
