Think of it as an online journal/diary which you can allow your friends to read and write responses in.
or you can allow the whole world to read it.

well with visitor messages you cant really post your thoughts by date and everyone comment on that days thoughts or events. it will just be a long mishmash.
in a blog, your entries are all seperate and comments from readers are specific to those entries.
if u clock on blogs and read some and their responses, and read the previous entries etc, that will give you a good idea.
