Block heater for your car

Well i don’t know where this fits.

What exactly IS a block heater? How is that different than the wire you plug into your car in winter? Are they the same?

This must be one of my stupid days; that’s all i’m wondering :smack: Thanks.

The Engine Block Heater is an electrical heating element. It is installed in the engine block water jacket. In cold weather, it keeps the engine's water warm; which in turn, keeps the engine temperature warm enough to allow easy engine starts. If you have a plug sticking out of the front of your car, you have a block heater.

oh yes, if u do get one installed like i am planning to also, (damm this canadian winter) then id also keep checking the oil levels on regular basis.. i heard if u use a block heater, chances are that u will be required to add some oil in the car a just a tiny bit more.

Thanks, Fret  i appreciate your help. Okay i have that. i thought maybe a block heater was some sort of additional portable ‘heater’, like an actual heater heater, you know - the indoor heater thingies you use in your room.

Left my mom’s car out for eight hours, didn’t run it - it wasn’t plugged in, and engine became frozen solid. It took three days to thaw even after it was towed to the garage and plugged in.

Canadian winters zindabad

Furqan, thank you. Yep actually the towing guy told me that i should add “gas-line antifreeze” straight into the engine - that prevents water from building up inside the engine i guess? Anyways all i know for sure is that’s gas-line antifreeze and it’s supposed to help your car start in the winter. Available at any gas station.

Thanks for the tip :k: i am almost tempted to take a car mechanics course so that i know exactly how to keep the car working during the winter.

I don’t get it. How does the car get so frozen??? I just got back to NY this weekend and both my cars were out of the garage and its been really really cold from what i hear. But they both started up on the first try. I just left them idling for 10-15 mnts for the hell of it. Ofcourse the windows were frozen and wouldn’t open till the inside of the car got heated up but everything else was just fine.
