Pakistan Blind Favourites to Win World Cup Final Today
KARACHI: Pakistan Blind start as the favourites today (Saturday) to win the World Cup Cricket for the Blind 2002 title, as they meet South Africa Blind in the tournament’s final at the M A Chidambaram Stadium in the Indian city of Chennai (Madras).
Four years ago, also in India (at New Delhi), Pakistan had finished as runners-up to South Africa in the first World Cup for the Blind. This year, they have a golden chance to avenge that defeat of 1998 as, in the league-round match earlier on December 11, Pakistan had achieved an emphatic 61-run triumph over the South Africans.
Pakistan finished at the number one spot in the 2002 preliminaries, with a total of 17 points from four wins in five matches. South Africa were second with 11 points in the six-team competition, but they lost two of their five games in addition to winning two while one match produced no result.
Pakistan Blind were off to a flying start when they beat Sri Lanka by 19 runs and hosts India by 31 runs in their first two encounters. Then, they lost to England by 65 runs in a tall-scoring match where they managed only 373-7 in reply to England’s massive 432-5.
Later on, it was smooth sailing for them. Pakistan Blind beat Australia by 65 runs and South Africa by 61 runs. At the semifinals stage on Thursday, they defeated England Blind by 111 runs.
South Africa Blind started off with an overwhelming 10-wicket win over England, but their match against Sri Lanka was washed out and the two teams shared the four points. South Africa lost to Australia by one run in a thrilling confrontation and then beat India by two wickets. After losing to Pakistan by 61 runs, they beat Australia in the semifinal by four wickets.
From the league-round, India and Sri Lanka had failed to make the last-four stage. England and Australia bowed out after playing in the semifinals. The Pakistan Blind team will be chosen from the following players:
B1 (totally blind) – Laiqat Ali Abbasi, Khalid Mahmood, Din Muhammad Shah, Muhammad Waqas, Sulman Elahi, Muhammad Shahbaz, Syed Muhammad Salman, Muhammad Nawaz; B2 (partially blind) – Abdul Razzaq (captain), Amir Ishfaq, Ali Gohar, Sajid Mehmood, Mohammad Waseem; B3 (partially sighted) – Muhammad Ashraf Bhatti, Ghulam Fareed, Muhammad Fayaz, Tariq Samuel and Shariq Yaseen.
Liaqat, Din Muhammad, Syed Salman, Waseem and Ghulam Fareed though have yet to play in any match. The Pakistan team’s most prolific batsman so far has been M Ashraf Bhatti, who has scored 370 runs in six matches at an average of 74.00. These have included scores of 109 not out and 83 against England, and 96 against Australia.
Wicket-keeper Tariq Samuel has made 327 runs at 54.50, his total including 131 against South Africa. In addition, he has held two catches and made three stumpings. Amir Ishfaq and Muhammad Waqas have picked up seven wickets each.
The South Africa Blind team, captained by Rory Field who was also their captain in 1998, includes P J Coetzee, F J P Kruger, J Schroeder, R P E Smal, P Prinse, D Mkwanazi, Pieter van der Berg, J Johannesotze, H C Liebenberg, R W Liebenberg, P A Le Roux, E M Conradie, A N Maartins, A E Primo, S R Naidoo and N A Meyer.

Has anyone in here have ever seen how the game is played.
It is very different from real cricket, instead of bouncing the bowl, the bowlers runs up and bowls with his underhand, and instead of the batsman standing up and play the shot, he is sitting in a position like he is sweeping the floor with a jhaaro.
Pakistan clinched the blind cricket World Cup after cruising to a five-wicket win over holders South Africa in the final with 16 balls to spare.
Chasing 256 for victory, **Pakistan looked in trouble early on at 74 for three, before Mohammad Ashraf Bhatti steered them home with an unbeaten 87 off 96 balls.
He was helped along the way by useful knocks from Muhammad Shahbaz, skipper Abdul Razzaq and Muhammad Fayaz, which finished 25 not out. **
Pakistan’s gamble on asking the 1998 champions to bat first in Madras was rewarded when South Africa were reduced to 86 for five by the 15th over.
Nathan Meyer and Riann Liebenberg added 96 runs for the sixth wicket, both men making half-centuries.
And a quickfire 34 balls from Pieta Le Roux got South Africa to 255 for eight in their 40 overs, but it was not enough for South Africa to hold on to their crown.
Congratulation to PAKISTAN

I dont remeber very clearly but what I saw in blind cricket was that bowlers can only bowl underarm and that the ball is like a jhunjuna for kids cozzz it has that sound thing inside and therefore the batsman sweeps the bowl I didnt c any sixxes but 4s were common

Following article is for those, who don’t know about Blind Cricket.
**Pakistan’s victory in the final of the blind cricket World Cup in Chennai is a remarkable feat. The Pakistanis beat former champions South Africa convincingly in what proved to be a thrilling encounter. The tournament is the most prestigious event of its kind in the cricketing calendar. ** :k:
What is most significant about Pakistan’s success is that **it was achieved despite a lack of proper facilities or adequate support and funding. **In a country where sports facilities even for the sighted are few and far between, it is remarkable that a group of dedicated blind and partially sighted people should go on to win the tournament in competition with the best teams in the world.
Blind cricket has been played since the 1920s when it was taken up by a group of enthusiasts in Australia. Since then, the game has made steady progress and spread to many parts of the cricket-playing world. Sound forms the basis of blind cricket.
**The ball is made of hard plastic and is filled with ball bearings that make a loud rattling sound when the ball is in motion. The players bat and field by judging the direction of the ball by its sound. Each team has 11 players of whom at least four must be totally blind and a maximum of four partially sighted. **
One major departure from traditional cricket is that the bowler has to bowl underarm. Otherwise, it is remarkable how blind cricketers are able to play the same brilliant cricketing shots, engineer run-outs and make difficult catches just as they do in cricket for the sighted.
The game not only provides a healthy source of diversion for disabled people but also gives them the confidence to cope with the rigours of everyday life. Blind cricketers are not looking for any sympathy from the public but require recognition and support. One hopes that the Pakistan team’s stunning success will prompt the government as well as the corporate sector to help the cause by improving facilities and offering sponsorships for this remarkable sport.
Abdul Razzaq!!!
