This has always been true with cricket except in the last 20 years or so. All cricketers had day jobs such as police constables, etc. etc. No wonder mega stars such as Viv Richards, Dennis Lillee, Imran Khan were willing to jeopardise their Test careers for a mere 10,000 pounds by playing in Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket. It's only in the recent past that cricket has become a well-compensated sport, and a full-time career.
