Another interesting fact to provide some context to this innings is that the preceding two games between Pakistan and Srilanka, Jayasuriya had broken the records for fastest hundred, fastest fifty, most sixes in an ODI innings. This was during the Singer cup in Singapore immediately following the 96 cup in India-Pakistan-Srilanka. (which Pakistan won) Afridi pulled two of these records back under the Pakistan column in this game. The third for fastest 50 stays with Jayasuria to this day.

I remember Amer sohail (who was the stand-in captain since Wasim dropped out of the WC QF) complained about the boundary being too close suggesting that was the reason Jayasuriya was able to break all the records. 
This Kenyan tournament was also one of the few tournaments South Africa did win. In the final Afridi took all three wickets South Africa lost in the game, which remained the highest number of wickets he took in an ODI untill 2000, 4 years later. After this game Afridi has has scored 8 more hundreds for Pakistan, 3 in ODIs and 5 in Tests. Pakistan has won all but one of these games.
This game was not covered live in Pakistan & we had to bribe people to get the game on video a week or so later
