Blasphemy Laws arrive in Malaysian Politics Now!

Why do the muslims insist on dragging blasphemy and apostacy laws into politics? That is just so damaging to the polity. It merely generates hypocrisy. I know some Guppies know a lot about malaysian politics. Maybe they can say what the heck does this mean?

Malaysian police question Islamic opposition leader over religious remarks

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Police interrogated the spiritual leader of Malaysia’s fundamentalist Islamic opposition party Monday over allegations that he made blasphemous comments, a party official said.

Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, the chief minister of northeastern Kelantan state, was questioned for about two hours at his office in the state capital of Kota Bahru, 400 kilometers (220 miles) from Kuala Lumpur, said party spokesman Mohamad Saiba Yaacob.

The interrogation came after government supporters recently filed two complaints with police over allegations that Nik Abdul Aziz called God a “gangster” during a political speech in Kelantan.

The politician has said his comments were taken out of context.

Nik Abdul Aziz “cooperated fully” with police, and there was no indication whether further action would be taken, Saiba told The Associated Press.

Police in Kelantan — one of two Malaysian states ruled by the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party — could not immediately be reached for comment.

Nik Abdul Aziz is one of the most prominent leaders of the Islamic party, which is Malaysia’s largest opposition group and chief political challenger to Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s ruling coalition.

Mahathir, who has led this Southeast Asian country since 1981, has accused the party, which wants to set up a fundamentalist Islamic state in Malaysia, of twisting religious principles to win the support of the country’s ethnic Malay Muslim majority.

The govt there is bent on apeasing the Muslims. I suppose they realize how fanatical Muslims can get if they dont get their way, and dont want to deal with a Malaysian Jihad. Unfortunetly, this means promulgating such laws as the "blasphemy" law, which will invariably make more problems then its worth. But I doubt they realize what they are getting themselves into. Im guessing they will fall flat on their face and try to reverse the decision, but will come up against the same jihadi fanatacism that they were trying to avoid in the first place. GOOD LUCK MALAYSIA....

In Pakistan if you call ALLAH swt thug/hooligan/criminal or gangster you get DEATH.

But in Malaysia there is no law -yet that say "One is not suppose to say things that are contrary to Islamic teaching." In another word Salman Rushdee would have a field day.

But don’t worry. I was told that this law will consist of fines or light imprisonment to deter people from abusing Allah swt.

But I seriously doubt Government of Malaysia would be able to pass this blasphemy law.
