Yeah, thats part of the deal... You have to sign up for a 2 year contract though, that gaurantees them a monthly bill, so they can afford to discount the phone.

yes I know I couldn’t possibly dream of ever competing against you folks and I have no intension’s of doing so, and over all my family is too small, my GD was the only son of his Father, further my Dad and My tayajan were the only sons of my GD but my Tayajan (may Allah rest his soul in Peace) passed away in a Car Accident in 1983 so since then my dad has been the only son my GD has, further my Tayajan family tree consist of a son and a daughter, my dad family tree consists of me and my 2 brothers and thats it, that my family, which unlike yours is pretty small, warna we might just have got a place in the Top 100 if not the Top 10 richest families of Pakistan

Not really, because we pay less for the phone, but its more of an actual consumers market. In India/PAkistan its the prepaid market, but here the companies focus more on revenue generations for future viability and are still promoting the post paid concept. Prepaid did come up here, but its still limited to people with bad credit, or those that barely use their phones.

Aisha, in the US, life is dependent upon credit ratings… Like its ultimately your credit rating which decides if you can get a house, car loan etc… People with good credit sign up for cell phones, so the company gets a gauranteed $60-70 (or more) per month in the form of a two year contract. Since they are adamant about keeping good credit, they do not break their contracts. Thats how these companies lure people into getting free or discounted phones.
Alot of them start started pre-paid services. Tmobile and ATT/Cingular have them too. People with bad credit cannot get a contract/plan so for them its a blessing. However, compared to Europe/Asia, the prepaid plans are still pretty darn expensive. I think one minute is around 25Cents.

Latest rumor is that BB Bold in US (with AT&T contract) will be sold for $299 (makes a lot of sense) and another $100 mail-in rebate (making it $199). Sweet!!!

Usually its for upgrades too, as long as your current phone is up for upgrade. If not, you pay full price. Not sure what it is.

Upgrades are same price as the ones that sign up for 2 year contract... at least that is the case with other phones.
This news headline is vastly misleading. BB Storm had its party, but its not available for purchase right now. Its expected to be in stores some time in November. More than likely, BB Bold will be available much before that - likely launch date is October 26th for BB Bold.
What I absolutely dislike about US cellphone system is the lack of interchangability between phones and carriers. I understand the point that carriers fund some R&D costs, thus put exclusivity deals in place, but what kinda archaic system is it where iPhone is only available on AT&T, Storm is only available on Verizon and Pearl Flip is only available on T-Mobile. Totally blah!
Now that my wife uses iPhone, I don’t want to split our AT&T family share plan and move to Verizon myself. Though if Storm is as good as it looks, I may very well do that.
