a little off topic, but the title of the movie had little to do with the theme, even though I saw that movie a long time ago, back in 1993 or something… It was about two hustlers (woody and wesley), a white guy and a black guy hustling their way in basketball, and woody looked like a loser who couldnt dribble, which helped them hustle their way through, making a sucessful team. The title of the movie actually went against this idea of them working as a team dont you think? Oh, and that girl who played woody’s girlfriend, she stole the show!

I think the whole issue of racism and "racial profiling" is WAY too sensationalized. Sure, white men cant jump in comparison to black people in general. And there is a vast number of black people who cannot read. If you happen to NOTICE this publicly, you are deemed racist. If you happen to notice publicly that 90 percent of violent crimes are committed by black males between the ages of 17 and 35, same thing. When Bill Cosby addressed black people with this issue, telling them to get their acts together and educate themselves, he was crucified by them. Have you ever listened to the ghetto-type "african americans"? They speak "ebonics", a version of english that is not recognizable to any extent at all and they dress in clothing sure to make even the most stalwart of us cross to the other side of the street. They are NOT the majority of black people. I do not consider myself to be "racist"...I'd welcome a nice family next door no matter what their color and some of the most intelligent and well-spoken professionals I ever worked with were of african descent. But if it were a family of "gangsta" style black people speaking ebonics moving in next door, I'd put up my For Sale sign next day. Theres a difference between reality and racism. IMHO.

Fraudia is saying it is hypocritical to attribute characteristics to white people such as not being able to jump, dance etc., which is racist, and then complain about people attributing characteristics to your race, in this case black people. If you watch any black comedians they will always make racist comments against white people such as ‘paki’ cab drivers. If someone were to make similar ‘jokes’ against black people, it might cause a riot. This is probably because black people are sensitive about racism. Suppose I made a joke about ‘indian’ cab drivers, the black community would be upset.

exactly, I happened to watch a stand up routine by jamie foxx, I believe it was filmed in oakland. he was completely going after desis, muslims, sikhs, etc, and I am okay with that, as long as someone can stand up and say the same kind of stuff about blacks and get away with it.

I would think that a group that coomplains about racism and prejudice, would know what it feels to be stereotyped and would refran from doing it, however any of the ‘black’ movies that I have seen have left me disappointed in how they depict others..whites, as well as other minority groups such as asians, south asians.

Spock- I do understand that the diff between title and the storyline of that movie, but I chose that title to illustrate a point.

I was watchign Oprah sometime ago and someone asked why can only black pple use the word nigger and whites cant...she said something along the lines of the whilte pple "giving" them that name..and now they (the black folks) "own" it...

Another good example is in the news lately. Some university began a new scholarship for "whites only". The outcry against this has been overwhelming and its been reported on every news channel. Yet there are numerous scholarships for blacks, even colleges just for blacks. If this isnt descrimination I'll eat my hat.

reminds me when I was in business school and talkig about one of my black friends and his experiences in desi settings. This chica gets all pissed off and says "excuse me... its 'african-american' actually" I responded back in a similar manner saying "he would be extrmely offended at being called african-american becuse first of all he calls himself black, second of all he is british and not american, and lastly he is not too fond of african-americans even though he is the same race"

I am used to the trm black because that is what is used in UK. I get confused in US because its BET not AAET etc. I just play it safe and say african american.

anyway thats a diff topic.
