I am no expert on this topic but can give you a Hadees and my two cents.
The hadees goes (paraphrasing) that prophet Mohammed :saw: told people during fajr prayers that the previous night, he encountered a jinn in his room who was there to annoy him. Prophet seized the jinn and thought of tying him to a pillar so he can show to the children of madina in the morning, but changed his mind thinking that influencing a jinn is a capability that his brother prophet Solomon exclusively requested for himself, and he should not disrespect Solomon by going against Solomon’s wish.
To me, this hadees points out two things.
Communicating/interacting with jinn is not kufr or shirk, or prophet would not have done that, but
Actually the dua of Suleiman (AS) was that nobody be given a kingdom like the one he had after him as far as I can remember. The reasoning used by some who use jinn catching (a separate topic) is that from this you can also deduce that the sunnah also had capturing of jinns for a short while and then setting them free.
Interacting with Jinn is not disallowed. RasoolAllah (SAW) brought a whole load into Islam in Makkah … He (SAW) is also their prophet … There are shayateen among the Jinn and black magic can be used to invoke the Jinn and use them for evil purposes. That is what is not allowed. Capturing a Jinn is like kidnapping a human … They are crimes.
There are ahadith of Jinn being seen by Sahabah and interacting of their own volition, without external pressure.
