Modi flags off Gujarat Gaurav Yatra

Agencies

The yatra was initially planned in July, but was postponed on Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayees’s insistence.

The much-hyped yatra was again postponed on September 3 to avoid possible violence at the launching point Phagvel village where Congress had threatened to hold a parallel function on the same day.

Modi stated, the procession would " instil in the people of Gujarat pride and self-confidence, which they lost after the sectarian violence".
The violence had damaged the image of Gujarat and affected the “pride and self-confidence of the people” Modi said. “Through the rally, we will reach out to the people in every part of Gujarat and help them regain pride in their state.”

The choice of Phagvel as the kick-off point for the yatra is significant. Legend has it that over two centuries ago, a Hindu warrior, Bhatiji, had waged a battle against Muslims in Phagvel as he tried to protect a herd of cows. Bahatiji, in whose memory a temple has been built, is believed to have died fighting.

I saw Indians throw rocks at each other on TV in a ritual, yearly event. It was said it is good to be hit by a rock. Ookay!

There's got to be a cultural reason for this annual ritual, probably steeped in centuries of history, folklore, and spirituality. Confess i'm ignorant about it, but i'm sure it means something culturally important to the Indians who practice it... just as important as, say, (ok so this is a lousy example but it's late at night & i'm tired) the annual Canadian "ritual" of polar ice dips in -20 degree temperature.
