Bitter tasting medicine to...

wean off breastfeeding?

I was talking to a friend of mine today and she told me how she had weaned off her 1 year old daughter with this med…with complete success…

anyone heard of this?

I have heard from some elders that they put a herb called chaascu in powder form. Also chaascu is very very karwa and helps diabetic patients as well.

Re: Bitter tasting medicine to...

but why wouldn't you just
a) wait until your baby is ready and weans him/herself
b) wean them gradually yourself without any medication involved? wouldn't that be less distressing for your little one?
contrary to everything i assumed, i've found out that breastfeeding is not the "easy peasy natural of course your baby will latch on" process for everyone, so for those who can, shouldn't you be happier to keep at it for as long as you can? don't babies at 1 usually take "comfort" feeds usually at night? at least this is what i've observed with a good friend of mine and her baby.
sorry, i don't mean to sound harsh or judge-y, but i've now seen two good friends of mine go through an immense amount of guilt and having such a sense of failure/rejection because either their babies never latched on or they weaned themselves off at barely two months old, and its distressing to see their distress. they're both rational, educated women and they know that it happens as it does but they still carry this guilt around with them and i can understand that, even though i am not a mother yet, because i myself have such high expectations of myself in regards to breast feeding. so i guess i'm just wondering why anyone would resort to an extreme measure like medication to wean their children...

Re: Bitter tasting medicine to...

SGC,

Two months is too early to wean a child off...but if ur still breastfeeding at 1.5 years or older than that ... sometimes it becomes necessary to put some medicine to make the child dislike what they liked before.... and it is not easy weaning... a lot of my friends had to make their child stop cold turkey (with medicine) coz the slow and easy way was NOT working...... as a parent we have to decide what is the best time to wean a child and a lot of parents don't always make the best decision...

Plus with the medicine, they just hate the taste, next time they reach for it... if they are given the same message... guess what third time either never comes or they learn its not as great as I remembered... ppl in the past (our mothers generation used herbs) ...these days I think there are medicines out there.... Herbs in my opinion are a much better way to go than medicines...

Re: Bitter tasting medicine to...

I dont like this idea at all. If the slow and easy way isnt working, that means the parent gives in to the child and/or isnt handling the child's reaction well. No means no. Today, tomorrow and every day, end of story. A typical weaning process takes quite a while and quite an effort, usually cutting back slowly over weeks or months until its just at bedtime and once the little one is capable of drinking with a sippy cup, none at all.

Using bitter taste on an 18 month old is cruel and I imagine it could have a negative impact on their willingness to drink and eat at all. It solves one problem quickly but could give rise to a host of other issues. Taking shortcuts like this isnt exactly model parenting.

what i meant was the babies themselves rejected breast milk at two months, so the mom couldn't do anything about it- they just weren't drinking at the breast so they had to use bottles.

Thankyou for the input guys...

This did sound a bit off but the idea of baby led weaning is pretty disturbing,in the sense that some babies just dont want to let it go. I was reading on the other forums that some people are still nursing their babies when they are 3/4. That's just odd. For us, religiously we are not supposed to go over 2 years of age. So, I guess if nothing else works, and you feel its the right time, maybe you can give the herbal stuff a go...
