I am a big fan of bitter sweet songs … bitter sweet meaning songs that have a very upbeat and “happy” tune but with extremely sad and depressing lyrics.

Some of my favourites are:

  1. Boys of Summer - Don Henley
  2. Najanay Kiyoun - Strings
  3. Sacrifice - Elton John
  4. Crushed - Rossette
  5. Hey Now, Hey Now - Crowded House
  6. Keep Holding On - Simply Red

All of these songs have fairly upbeat and ‘happy’/‘romantic’ tunes … you would never guess unless you actually listened to the words how truly sad they really are. I love such songs.

I can name millions, it's mostly all I listen to. They are bittersweet not necessarily according to your definition but because they are attached to those kinds of memories.

Ooh, I like Stina Nordenstam. Her song 'Little Star' is good too.

Some more bitter sweet songs .....'Wonderful Life' by Black and 'Porcelain' by Moby.

Pretty much everything by RadioHead is bitter sweet. I love them. Ooh, and one of my favourites is 'Enjoy the Silence' by Depeche Mode.

That's my favorite Depeche Mode song! I got one of their greatest hits cd's once and it took me a long time to get into it but now I love it. Enjoy the Silence and Only when I lose myself are awesome. I love the lyrics:

There's a thousand reasons why I shouldn't spend my time with you
For every reason not to be here I can think of two.

I really like Mandalay's Insensible and This Life, and Tori Amos' cover of Wrapped Around Your Finger. I find them really bittersweet.

Recommend something obscure Mehnaz. I am surprised and pleased you've heard Stina Nordenstam, I haven't come across anybody else who has.

my 2nd fav song of all time is aptly named bittersweet symphony

for some reason bittersweet songs seem to be the most touching

Hmmm, something obscure .... well, I don't know if it i necessarily obscure cause she's quite famous in England, but music by Kate Bush (older 80s stuff) is quite hypnotic. Her singing style is totally different than anybody else.

Another bitter sweet song is Save a Prayer by Duran Duran.
