Bitten by the Natural Bug

I shampoo my hair everyday.

I condition my hair everyday.

I use deodorant everyday.

I use body lotion everday.

I use body wash everyday.

Does anyone wonder if there are natural alternatives without sulfates and harsh chemicals?

I don’t like nature…it makes me break out. I love my chemicals so much…lol.

But I wonder if switching to home made personal care products help us in the long run.

Or are all these people who are making this stuff at home consipiracy theorists?

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

And just a side note: I made my first batch of homemade shampoo this morning. While it smells strange, it works really well. I have to scent it with something - anything I like - but then it should be fine.

How did your make your shampoo? Can you please tell me the ingredients and also what type of hair its meant for? Thanks!

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

I had tried homemade amla (India gooseberry), reetha (soapnut), shikakai (acacia concinna) shampoo. From what I can remember it didn't smell bad at all and did leave my hair with nice bit of gloss.

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

I have dry hair...so this works for me:

Castile soap - I use Dr Bonners but there are other types
Coconut milk - home made
Avocado oil
Honey

I don't think I will use honey next time or maybe much less of it. If you have really fine hair, this will help with volume I think because my hair appears fuller today.

Again, it smells strange but I can add fragrance easily.

There are manyyyyy variations of this though...it'll be fun.

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

Try any of your favourite essential oil for bit of smell.

My grandmother as a little girl, used to get her hair washed with milk or lassi lol.

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

For conditioner you can use lemon juice diluted with equal parts water.

For deodorant, you can use crystal rock salt deodorant. Or you can just rub baking soda in your underarms it eliminates odors.

For body lotion, there are many recipes on the internet for body butters, I guess you could use them instead of body lotion?

And sometimes I wonder the same too lol...

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

try just plain old besan instead of face wash.
you can add a drop or two of rose water and almond oil if you like....

chemicals are not good.....no conspiracy about that.

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

I've tried crushed rose petals (bought as a powder) mixed with a little oil / water (can't quite remember) as a face mask. Not sure if it actually helped my skin but it was fun!

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

I tried lemon essential oil in the shampoo this morning - my hair smells like pine sol and spinach :smack:

I’ll look for lavendar tonight I think

I found recipes for both - I think I’ll be trying them in the next week or so.

For face wash, I switched to the OCM which takes off my makeup too so I guess that’s where it started.

I bought aloe vera last night…going to see how I could use it.

It is fun actually. I couldn’t break the coconut though so my dad helped me a little bit with making the shampoo :rotfl:

I am going to try an avocado hair treatment I keep thinking about…one of our old users farrah posted it a while ago. Her hair changed dramatically in only two months but she really took care of it. The avocado mask was a part of her regimen.

I will do this step by step to see if it works for me…I’ll perfect my shampoo first, then conditioner (all the conditioner recipes I find call for ACV which stinks like a zoo), then deodorant, then lotion and then body wash.

Although for lotion I could probably use an oil except I love my Nivea so much - the German one - that shouldn’t need replacing right?

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

I'm somewhere in between now. I use what works for me. I don't buy into all the the expensive miracle creams, nor do I think chemicals are going to give me cancer.

When I was in my early twenties, I did make the switch to natural. Lush had just taken off and I was using cleanser, toner and moisturiser from them as I thought it would help my acne. When my hair started falling out, I switched to sulphate free shampoos but it didn't help and my hair just became dull too so I switched back. Turns out it was just stress and they got better on their own in time.

Everyone here knows how much I love oils, so they are are staples in my routine. And I've always kept to the natural toners since first trying them. But moistursier and hair products... give me man made stuff.

And I wish someone had told me about peels when I had acne or that I knew about retin-A earlier. My sister is using glycolic acid and in the last 3-6 months her skin has improved so much.

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

Been there done that for almost 10 years - gave up for a while along the way! had kids, freaked out reading the labels of baby products and went back on this path again, till this day I still haven’t found a natural deodorant that actually works, as goes for shampoo your recipe sounds pretty good! try adding fragrance and see where it takes you! I would love to try ‘neem leaves’ shampoo

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

stoppit, I love my skin care products. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to leave retinol or my salicylic acid toners or even my facial moisturizer. I don’t know anything natural that has ever controlled my skin the same way!

Yeah, lots of people tell me to use baby shampoo and I did for a bit but hated it. My hair felt like straw all the time. :frowning:

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

I tried the avocado hair treatment:

avocado
banana
egg
vitamin e oil
almond oil

LOVE IT

Next time, I am also putting in aloe vera

Re: Bitten by the Natural Bug

Have you tried the Macadamia deep repair masque? It is ah-ma-zing! Especially since you mentioned you have dry hair, and I do too and it has literally worked wonders! I would never go back to any other hair masques, I am on my 3rd or 4th jar already. It makes hair super soft and shiny and smells so dang good..you can use it every 2 days or so..

Definitely look into it. It’s a two thumbs up product from my end. Love, love it.
