Do birthdays play a significant role in your life?
keeping aside religious point of view, what do you think of celebrating birthdays kids and elders alike?

Re: Birthdays
We don't make a huge deal out of them but we do celebrate birthdays in my family ...
This year, for my daughters birthday I made a cake bought a gift and celebrated it just the three of us. On my birthday hubby takes me out to dinner and usually gets me a gift. Husbands birthday is celebrated at home. I make his fave dinner, a cake and get him a gift. But we don't throw huge parties or anything like that.
Re: Birthdays
^ exactly. I believe birthdays to be more of a small family gathering where one can celebrate and be grateful for a good, happy year for that person. But don't believe in people going OTT.
But also there are people who take as a little birthday celebration to be completely wrong too, which doesn't make sense either

Someone we know believe that celebrating birthdays are wrong. Sometimes they'll get a cake for their children's birthdays but wont put candles on it. They wont give their kids any gifts on their birthdays etc .. I don't get it but to each their own.
Re: Birthdays
My parents weren't really toooo into it. I mean as kids we'd have parties with either cousins and stuff when we were in pakistan or with school friends when we were abroad. But I think since I was like 15 or so there wasn't too much celebration as such.
Re: Birthdays
birthdays are for kids.
Re: Birthdays
I stopped cutting a cake on my birthday when I stepped into twenties. Couldn't be bothered. Before that the family was never enthusiastic about parties and stuff, it would always be amongst friends. I think the only party I had was for my 1st birthday. =D
Now we just go out as a family and have dinner on whoevers birthday it is. With friends, it's always lunch or coffee if we really have to do anything. No special arrangements whatsoever.
Re: Birthdays
it has NO significance when it come to celebrating my own birthday...i usually don't even remember this day...i do NOT celebrate my own birthday...
however, i am very particular about remembering birthdays of my nephews and nieces. i make sure i call them and send them gifts and take them to dinner if they are where i am.
in my family, older people do NOT celebrate their birthdays either.

Same here.
We use birthdays to make the person feel special. That is his/her day and I think the person deserves every bit of attention. Plus I use the birhdyas of my daughters to spoli them just a bit, and but them gifts that they wanted but could not convince us to buy otherwise.
Re: Birthdays
we normally just get a cake at home and have a family celebration. some times, friends would come but that is just for mine or sisters' birthdays. normally, friends are insistant to have bdays so have a small celebration, if not at home it is just with family and small.
however, my parents did celebrate my 1st bday at McDonalds, 16th at home with lots of friends and i had 18th bday dinner treat for all my close friends :)
