At a year old, the “birthday kid” is usually the one least interested in the entertainment - they’re too young and with all the people and noise around, the kids generally get overstimulated. When deciding who to hire, figure out how old most of the kids are and find entertainment that they and their parents might sit through.

For family birthdays, we’ve hired a clown, a magician, and for the most recent birthday - a puppeteer. The puppeteer was a huge hit! It was loud and colourful and interactive and not overwhelming (I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen wailing kids terrified of a Dora the Explorer or Barney-costumed character).
