dont do a clown... i scared midget crapless by having a clown on his firsrt.
if its a castle cake.. thats your theme right there. why castle though?
is there anything thats been a recurring theme in your kid's clothing.. or furniture or accessories bedding you got for her? does she have a nursery? maybe take inspiration from that?
The banner thing sounds adorable! I wanted to do that on my daughters first birthday too. Print out a bunch of pictures from each month of her first year

Aww poor midget! That's a deffo no for the clown then, I thought clowns were funny tho
I saw a castle cake when I went to this cake shop. I just fell in love with it plus no one I know has done that so it's be unique, I am open for other ideas tho
Nope none of her clothes are of any themes heck even her bedding hasn't got any cartoons etc
At a year old, the "birthday kid" is usually the one least interested in the entertainment - they're too young and with all the people and noise around, the kids generally get overstimulated. When deciding who to hire, figure out how old most of the kids are and find entertainment that they and their parents might sit through.
For family birthdays, we've hired a clown, a magician, and for the most recent birthday - a puppeteer. The puppeteer was a huge hit! It was loud and colourful and interactive and not overwhelming (I can't tell you the number of times I've seen wailing kids terrified of a Dora the Explorer or Barney-costumed character).
BD parties, especially first ones are super fun,esp for the parents…
I did not have a very specific theme to begin with for my daughter’s first one but eventually it became a colored theme. It was the same color for the cake, the candles, the balloons, the streamers, the banner, the favor bags, her dress, the disposables used for the cake and so on…
^do whatever you feel like doing.. just make sure you dont leave much work for the atcual day!
My son just turned 1 in November.. I was always against throwing first birthday parties but I enjoyed having a small birthday party for my son.. it was just my husband, myself, baby, and anotehr close family.. thats all. We had the very hungry caterpillar party theme and kept the menu very low key. We only made rice and pizza on the day of birthday and decorated the table.. but rest was all done days in advance.
Also, yes smash cake is an American thing but we didnt do the smash cake because I am just not in favor of throwing away food or letting him "smash" the food.. but other than that I have no issues against it. It looks cute nonetheless :D

Puppeteer idea sounds good! The age range varies from 1 till 16 so got a lot of kids :D
