Birth Plan

I am having a scheduled c-section. Has anybody on here, who also had a known c-section, written a “birth plan” and/or submitted one beforehand when knowing they were having a c-section? What did it say? I am thinking of having one, but I can’t really think of anything that would be practical in my situation other than “ABSOLUTELY NO BOTTLES OR PACIFIERS” for the baby since I am going to breastfeed. Help me out with suggestions or advice here… Thanks in advance.

Re: Birth Plan

u can also choose your anesthesia like Epidural , General , Spinal

I would suggest going for Spinal

is spinal less painful :aq:

Re: Birth Plan

well i had an epidural n all went well until i took a puff of the entonox gas which almost sent me into a coma (long story),grin
also i breastfed my son till he was 16 months old MashAllah n never once gave him a pacifier and he never took a bottle either, he was straight onto beaker n glass n drinkin from a straw at the age of 6 mnths, i tried to plan stuff beforehand but unfortunately its very awkward to do that, after u have had the baby u will automatically knw what to do n what not to do
As for the c-section :hmmm: i dunno…but am thinkin of having one next time…thats if i decide to have another baby

Re: Birth Plan

How did you make your 6 months old baby drink from a straw?
Ok so you didn't make him, he did it on his own but how?
I have an 8 mos old and I thought he was too young to let try a straw.

yeah i also want to know ....how a 6 months old can drink from a glass:)

Re: Birth Plan

I did have a birth plan and did have a something about a c-section in case I needed one. I included the following (you may have entirely different needs); no males present during the procedure, my doula (labor assistant) be allowed during the procedure besides my husband, a mirror be held up so I may see it (or not!). I didn't need the c-section part but my friend whose birth plan I made needed one and they followed it except the doula part .

Re: Birth Plan

The baby is not handed the glass. I used to hold a glass to my 6 month old's lips and helped him sip. He also used a sippy cup (not the straw one). Lots of babies in Pakistan drink from a glass the same way.

Re: Birth Plan

You have to be really careful with that....when they arent quite ready for it, theres a chance of aspiration - getting some of the fluid into their lungs. This is aspiration pneumonia - not something you would ever want to deal with. If you stick to the basic age-appropriate and well documented guidelines, you'd be doing yourself and your little one a big service.

Re: Birth Plan

Hey Mamaof3, how does a baby get aspiration pneumonia? Is it just simply by drinking the water out of the glass, or is it that too much might be taken in? Because my 9 month old also drinks from a glass, that I hold. But I am careful to only let him take in a little at a time, and so far its been ok. I am a little concerned about the pneumonia you mentioned. He also drinks from a sippy cup, the one with soft nozzle, but its difficult to get him to do it on his own, he thinks the sippy cup is a toy, maybe its the bright colors, I am not sure.

Re: Birth Plan

Just hold the sippy cup to his mouth and eventullay he will get the idea. I also gave very small sips to my children at one time like taking madicine through a dropper (small amounts).

Re: Birth Plan

A-S, aspiration pneumonia happens when something other than air goes into the lungs. Fluid, food etc. Babies have an inborn ability to coordinate suck, swallow, breathe. But drinking from a cup beleive it or not is a much more complicated task. They have to coordinate many more muscles in their mouths, not take a breath while doing this and then swallow. I forget the "typical" age (9 months? not sure) that a typical baby is neuro-developmentally ready to do this.

Anyways, aspiration pneumonia is almost sure to happen if they breathe in any fluid or food. Can even happen to adults. Dont get too worried, it sounds like your little one has it down pat....you just have to be careful when you do things so much earlier than recommended yeah?

Re: Birth Plan

Spinal is not painfull at all if i compare to Epidural
All i felt with Spinal a regular needle kinda pain you feel when you get blood drawn or you get injection thats it
I was not numb right away lied down on my own and no nausea and vomiting I was more on sleepy side with spinal as compare to throwing up nauseous with Epidural

Re: Birth Plan

Oh MMyyyy Gooddd!!!
I would never be able to have a baby, I'm such a scary cat and this definately freaked em out. i'll tell my husband tonite, we are never having kids!!!

Re: Birth Plan

Shah, dont worry too much - I'm the worst scaredy cat there could be, I faint when I have to get a needle lol! And I got thru 3 births with very little medication - just a half dose of painkiller Nubain and thats it, all 3 times. You just get thru it and then you realize that it really isnt as bad as all the horror stories you hear!

Re: Birth Plan

yeah i have also heard that SPINAL BLOCK is the best you dont feel that much of a pain as first the doc give an injection to suun that part.well all i can say is JISS PAI BEETAI USSI KO PATA HAI:)

Re: Birth Plan

knock knock…suggestions for BIRTHPLAN guppies…:hehe:

Re: Birth Plan

Really ask your doctor about spinal vs. epidural. Each has its benefits and negatives. I didn't have a birth plan and everything was fine.

I breast fed until 1 year...completly weaned the am BF by 14 months and used paci and bottles when neccessary.

I used a paci for my daughter for soothing but didn't let her get used to having it in her mouth all the time...i breast fed but gave bottles of pumped milk when needed. I would NOT worry about getting kids off bottles/paci. you can do it but just work at it and it does have its help. You also have to work on if they refuse hte bottle....you can get them to get used to it ..just gently try it out and speak to a lactation consultant about how to do it.

I moved my daughter to sippy cups of water at about 8/9 months though she liked drinking out of cups. I weaned dat 1 year to bottles with milk, then a month later started sippy of milk..no issues.

with regards to cups- the problem is that she's v. independent and likes to walk around now and giving her a normal glass means she spills it on the floor....and then slips and falls.

Re: Birth Plan

Exactually our problem. She likes spilling water and its dangerous on hard wood floor.

We just stopped bottles during day time and now use sippy cups and she loves them too.

Only during night time she is still having 2 bottles of milk, I let her as she needs the milk. I worry about her teeth and she doesnt let me brush them, she does it herself and its not properely done.

Re: Birth Plan

sadia as ur signature dont be a kabab mai haddi:hehe: let the poor kid brush her own teeth ..that ll be more fun for her.
