Birth Plan and Birth Stuff Toronto

Salam everyone,

Anyone here gave birth in Ontario / Toronto region? I have a few questions that I wanted to as! I am MashaAllah and Alhamdulillah 21 weeks pregnant.

  1. Did you guys make a birth plan and was it useful when you reached the hospital? Did you follow any template?

  2. How many cms do you have to be dilated before been given epidural?

  3. How long did it take to get the Birth Registeration and passport for the newborn as I am planning to travel very soon after giving birth since I have to go see my husband who wont be here for my delivery! I am staying with my parents ! Can you apply for the urgent one and how long does that one take ?

  4. How long did you use your first travel system for? Like the carrier/car seat?

Thanks everyone in advane! Ill post more if anything just slipped out of my mind  x

Re: Birth Plan and Birth Stuff Toronto

  1. Birth is an unpredictable process. I had a birth plan but didn’t even show it to the nurses- everything I had on there was standard procedure at Mt. Sinai and so it wasn’t required. But like I said- giving birth follows no set formula. Don’t be rigid about your birth plan if you do make one because you don’t know how it will go.

  2. Epidurals can be administered at anytime up until 8 cms I believe.

  3. Not sure but I think a couple of weeks at most? You can expedite the process.

  4. We used the infant car seat - both inside the car and clicked on to the stroller- until he outgrew it. I want to say around 7 months but I don’t recall exactly. We had the Graco and it goes up to 35 lbs or 32" tall- whichever comes first. In any case, this is not a purchase you can put off- they will not let you leave the hospital without an infant car seat for your baby so it really doesn’t matter how quickly your kid gets to weight or height limit.

Thanks SGC .. I have heard the registration process can take up to 6-8 weeks :bummer: and then 15 business days for the birth certificate and I cannot apply the passport until I have these two in place. Seeing that you had your first delivery in Toronto. Did you remember how long did it take? Does the hospital give you the package regarding information about this or you figure it out yourself?

Re: Birth Plan and Birth Stuff Toronto

You are 21 weeks along, and should be seeing an OB by now?

Their office should provide you with all the information (First 3 asked questions) in regards to registration and where to call at the closest hospital within your city

As for car seat, mine was also a snap and go type of system (Peg Perego)…It lasted me until 7-8 months.

I also used a bassinet that snapped onto the same frame for longer outings such as weddings/restaurants so the baby can sleep at ease; And I would change diapers in there as well.

gross but whatever :hehe:

True! Your OBs office should have all this for you including how to register for the actual birth too. In any case, Mt Sinai has a “class” for parents to attend where you fill out all the necessary forms the morning you are being discharged.

Your baby’s passport application will have to be processed separately at a passport office. We needed to get him a passport when he was 2 months old and were able to expedite the process to a week, if I remember correctly but we paid extra for this.

if you are having a boy and planning to circumcise, ask the hospital about the fees and timeline for this too. Again, we were able to have this done when he was two days old at Sinai and paid around $300- I think- since it isn’t covered by OHIP.

also check this website for all the info on registering a birth: Register a birth (new baby) | ontario.ca

Re: Birth Plan and Birth Stuff Toronto

Hi Mccague,

I recently gave birth in the GTA so I can tell u a little bit about the procedure.

Before u r discharged from the hospital, the nurse completes the health card registration and they give u information on how to do registration for birth certificate, SIN etc… U can do all the registration online after the baby is born at servicecanada.ca and it only takes a couple of minutes.

They say birth certificate takes 6-8 weeks after the child’s birth is registered in their system, but it usually takes a 10 days to arrive in the mail.
Make sure u order the LONG FORM birth certificate, that is the only one accepted by passport office. I think it costs 35$.

In terms of passport, it takes like 10 days after u submit all the papers at the office, but u can expedite that by paying an urgent fee.

Two things I’d suggest u keep in mind:

1- the baby needs a Pakistani visa
2- in order to apply for a Canadian passport, the office needs consent from the father and ID of the father, if he is out of the country. He can either go to an office in Pakistan or fax them in.

I hope this info helps a little.
