I need to ask you guys something as I am trying to help out a friend who got married 2 weeks ago. Her gynae gave her BCP that she’s suppose to start the sunday after her periods but she’s leaving for honeymoon on Friday and wants to start the BCP early. I have no clue about this stuff and want to ask you guys if that’s okay for her to do so? Or will it cause complications?
Re: Birth Control
Why doesn't your friend just ask her doctor herself??
Re: Birth Control
She will when she's able to get an appointment. For now, I am asking GS people this question.
Re: Birth Control
I think BCPs need time to start working, like atleast one cycle. So she shouldnt expect to start taking them today and be safe tomorrow. She should take them as recommended and meanwhile use another method.
Re: Birth Control
I think her goal is to not get her periods lol.. because she's going to malaysia for honeymoon and wants to do water sports.
Re: Birth Control
I don't think you can use BCPs to stop your period. She needs a special pill for that. Ask her to get it from her doc, but if she hasn't completed one cycle of her BCP she may need to use other protection as well.
Re: Birth Control
Dont BCP start from the first day of the period.
So the first day of her period she starts taking the pill in the red box and then follow the days.
tell her to use tampons, she can now that she is married ![]()

not necessarily...
Re: Birth Control
you can skip the red box completely and have no periods but then thats just wrong, the body needs to get rid of the stuff.

i tried that, but it didnt work and completely messed things up...
I think, as Niksik said, you're better off just getting the pill that stops ur period.
Re: Birth Control
Web MD all the way!!!
Re: Birth Control
yep, I think she will be better off with the pill that stops the periods, I believe it's called norethisterone tablets - it should be taken 3 times a day until she wants her periods to be delayed, once she's okay she could get off the medicine and the periods will resume. I don't believe there are any adverse side effects, but then again, I am not sure. She could definitely look into it as a solution.
Re: Birth Control
Taking the med that stops her periods will really mess up her normal cycle. As Ad said, its best to use Tampons! And re the BCP, it needs to be taken during the period. Shay tell her that whatever the doc has said is right - better to be safe than regretting it later.
Re: Birth Control
no, the only BC you take during your period is if you're on the 28 day pack- that include 3 weeks of pills plus 1 week of sugar pills. those sugar pills don't do anything, they're just there for people who would prefer to keep taking them and keep their habit going of "one pill a night" so they don't forget when they're supposed to start a new pack.
the 21 day pack is for those who are responsible enough to take three weeks in a row and then count seven days from the time the pack finishes to start a new pack.
shay, pills do take at least one cycle to work, not only effectively but also to stop her period. she might still get spotting even if she starts the pill right away.
ideally she should have seen the doctor at least three months before- what if this brand of pill doesn't suit her and she feels nauseous? that would really suck on her honeymoon.
i agree with adra, tampons are the best way to go in this case, but what does her being married have to do with using tampons??
The amount of times ive herd that ![]()
I’m surprised how many ladies use bcp and other stuff to stop your period and as contraceptives. Aren’t you guys afraid of messing up your cycles and causing hormonal imbalance and not to mention weight gain:confused:
