Birth Control Pills...Did you Start Before the Wedding?

I know this is an embarrasing topic to talk about…but im 21 and getting married next month…i really don’t want to have kids for a while (at least 3 years, or until im done with my masters). I’ve seen alot of my friends getting pregnant right away after marriage, and i really really want to start taking the pills right now for higher prevention…but its embarrasing to speak to someone about it.

Are any of you future brides taking the pills already? How did you approach someone to take you to the doctors? I’ve heard you gain weight? Is it normal for desi girls to take it BEFORE the wedding?

Hey,

Its not embarrassing, it's an important topic. Im not married myself but I do know a lot about contraception since I just finished my 3rd year OB/GYN rotation =)

If you are a person who will remember to take the pill EVERYDAY during the same time, then it can be a good option. A better option I suggest is the Depo Provera shot. You take it every three months and it's basically a surge of progesterone in your body, so your periods will slow down or even go away for a bit. This is the most popular method right now. Some patients experience minor hairloss but that's a rare s/e. Also if you don't want to gain too much weight with the pills, then this is a better option.

If you want something even more permanent, you can get an IUD inserted. There is the mirena which is hormonal and the paraguard which has no hormonal involvement but is made of copper which acts like a spermicide.

Mirena can be inserted for upto 5 years and the paraguard can be inserted for upto 10 years. You can take it out anytime before incase you change your mind.

I would personally go for the paraguard, but the only problem is you wont really be able to get it inserted before you get married since it requires some dilation. So until then I would get the Depo Provera. Which you have to get anyway before an IUD so the uterine walls don't proliferate.

Let me know if you have any questions. I'll be glad to help:)

I started at around 16 (for tummy aches lol)..

I've read a few girls on here mention that they went on the pill before their big day so I think it's pretty normal..
