Birth Control Options After Having a Baby

Hi Ladies,

I tried searching through the forums and couldn’t find any discussion on this topic, so I thought I’d ask. What birth controls options have you used/recommend/not recommend after giving birth? I’ve talked to friends and done some research, but am still confused as to what to consider:

IUD

BCPs

Diaphragm

Condoms only

Others

I have my follow up with my OB in 2-3 weeks, so I wanted to have an idea of what works best before I sit down with her. She recommended IUD saying its easiest and you don’t have to worry about taking pills, etc, etc…but I have read mixed reviews about it.

What do most desis/muslims do? We plan on having more babies in the next 3+ years inshallah.

Please share your experiences/thoughts/advise!

Some friends got the shot. Forget the name. Bust most people go on the pill.

Re: Birth Control Options After Having a Baby

I know women who went on the pill or got the IUD (but they took the latter because they don't plan on any for at least a few more years)

Re: Birth Control Options After Having a Baby

If you're not planning on having kids for 3+ years like you said, then the best options would be the hormone implant, or IUD. These are low maintenance options that can be reversed at any time.

IUD FTW.

thanks for the replies/

I've heard IUD can also cause bleeding, weight gain, etc....same side effects as BCPs. One of friends also told me she's heard of IUDs falling out- is that true?

^ any time you put hormones into your body in excess of what needs to be there, you run the risk of side effects. you just have to try your options to see what suits you the best. also, i'm pretty sure its impossible for IUD's to fall out if they've been inserted properly and its not a DIY gig- your doctor does it for you.

pre-baby, i can say that the depo-provera shot was the worst thing i've ever used. i did gain weight on it and i had constant spotting for 6 months which sucked. yasmin, the pill, suited me much better. if i choose to go back on something after giving birth, it will probably be yasmin.

I went on the Yasmin Pill and it worked for me! Good luck to whatever you choose x
