Re: Birth Control and Breastfeeding
Salam,
akmoti, how long have you been breastfeeding? The combined oral contraceptive pill (containing oestrogen and progesterone) is contra-indicated in the first 6months of breastfeeding, as it is known to increase milk supply and also milk quality. After 6 months, it is licensed to be used.
Te progesterone only pill however can be used from 6weeks after birth whilst breast feeding, it hasn't really shown to have any effect on the quantity or quality of milk. It is in a relatively small dose, and if you do happen to be in the minority of women that feel that it is having a negative effect, the good thing about it is that you can stop it straight away.
The injection is not really recommended, as it lasts 12weeks, so if it doesn't suit you, you will have to put up with it for 12 weeks.
I forgot to add, suckling as mentioned above is the single best way to maintain milk supply.
Also, breast-feeding can be used as your form of contraception, but for it to reliable, your baby needs to be less than 6months old and be suckling and feeding exclusively by breast, with feeds no longer than 4hrs apart. Additionally, you should be completely amenorrhoeic (ie not had any periods since baby was born)
Hope that helps
Re: Birth Control and Breastfeeding
i’m breastfeeding since 3 months only…and i took the injection after 6weeks after my baby’s birth…![]()
Re: Birth Control and Breastfeeding
I just read what I wrote, I meant to write the Combined pill DECREASES milk supply, sorry!
About the injection, don't worry now that you have had it, it is progesterone-only if I am thinking of the right one. Just drink a good amount of water each day and keep baby latched for a good amount of time each day. InSha Allah the feeding should still be ok :)
