In all my years of doing Laundry, I have never really focused on buying specifically Bio or Non-Bio detergent. I just get which ever one smells nicer and looks economical !
But just a few days back someone said for all baby laundry, using a Bio detergent is better then Non-Bio … does it really make a huge difference? Am I just unaware of the benefits of choosing bio over non-bio?
No probs cb. That’s the only difference I can think of
Here’s something I found on the net as I’m not good at explaining things
"Powder or tablet sensitive Non Bio … contains Bleach, Perfume, Surfactants, Polymers & Builders (softners) … no enzymes (they are responsible for breaking up NATURALY occuring stains ie sweat, grass, bark, soil … the bleach is what affects the colour … enzymes are the prime irratator so this is why if you look at the ingredients on a “sensitive” product they will be missing. Perfume (and bleach) can also be an irritant which is partly why some brands now come in 2 or more fragrances … so if one irritates you can try another without leaving the “brand”
Liquid Non Bio (bottle & liqui tabs) … they contain Perfume, Surfactants, polymers, Builders & enzymes … no Bleach … they are better for your colours but you will have a hard time removing stains from very pale or white clothing with liquids as there is no bleach …
Powder or Tablet Bio … they contain all the 6 key components to get your clothes clean .. Bleach, Enzymes, Polymers, Perfume, Builders & surfactants … ideal for your whites & very pale clothing … over time (after about 10 washes) you can start to see the detrimental effect on the colur balance between the garment & an identical one (should you have one) "
So non bio is used for sensitive skin like babies. Haven’t tried bio for bubba so can’t comment on that, maybe some one on here has and can advise?
And yup we use fabric softener and have had no issues
Are you sure that you haven’t got that mixed up CB? As far as I know the recommendation is to use NON bio for washing babies clothes as its meant to be less harsh. I use Fairy or Ecover detergent. Although I do find that non bio doesn’t get whites really white and doesn’t always shift the poo stains (sorry!) so I do sometimes wash items in bio detergent and give the load an extra long rinse. I don’t use fabric softener as I don’t want to put unnecessary chemicals onto baby’s clothing.
It’s also a good idea to wash all your baby’s clothes before they’re worn.
I don’t think it’s necessarily bad CB…just depends on your standards to some extent too. Lots of people don’t mind if their whites are blinding white but I do, and I find that with non bio after a couple of washes the whites lose their brightness so I wash them with bio every few washes. Not that babies ever get that much wear from clothes before growing out of them anyway as you will soon find yourself inshahallah.
And I must admit that when I’ve had a particularly bad leaky nappy incident then sometimes I don’t even bother trying to tackle the stains on the vests and have thrown them away instead. Frivolous I know but life’s too short
