Bio nerd puzzle

here’s one. true story.

Mr. X is having some medical issues, and needed to find donors for an organ transplant for him. So the docs run a dna match test with the blood of all his immediate relatives aganist his dna. And they found a few potential matches. But they also found his birth mom’s dna test came back showing her not being his mom. His mom was all mad, so they did the test over, and again - her dna said she couldnt be the mom. His dad’s dna matched up perfectly.

Whatappened?

Re: Bio nerd puzzle

Had she recieved a transplant at some point in her life? (not even sure if that would cause this problem) Only thing I can think of is that they had the child through IVF and the wrong egg was fertilised.

Re: Bio nerd puzzle

mom's never had any kind of surgery or major procedures done, no transplants. and the guy was conceived naturally on a summer trip to hawaii.

Re: Bio nerd puzzle

For some reason Mitochondria springs to my mind :konfused:
Or maybe hawaii was a clue hmmm, I might leave this one to someone that has studied biology in the last decade.

Re: Bio nerd puzzle

Maybe they used a bollywood style surrogate mom :p

Re: Bio nerd puzzle

I remember a news story a while ago about this sort of thing. Its called Chimerism.

‘In human biology, a chimera is an organism with at least two genetically distinct types of cells – or, in other words, someone meant to be a twin. But while in the mother’s womb, two fertilized eggs fuse, becoming one foetus that carries two distinct genetic codes - two separate strands of DNA’

That means the child could be carrying one particular DNA from a particular ‘part’ of the mother.

EDIT: Wikipedia - Chimerism

Re: Bio nerd puzzle

Hai hai yeh to Bollywood movie ka naya plot hai.

Let’s call it: Tumhari maa kon :hmmm: or Mey, meri maa, aur woh, or Ek kahani, doh maaein. :hmmm:

Re: Bio nerd puzzle

well done, GIDSA!

the mom turned out to be a chimera, sorta like an extreme siamese twin.. her blood and some other systems were from one twin, brain, reproductive system etc from another.

here’s one such case.

Re: Bio nerd puzzle

COOL!!!

Re: Bio nerd puzzle

is it traditional surrogacy where the surrogate mother goes through the process of artificial insemination using father's sperm. therefore the surrogate mother is biological mother of the baby.

Re: Bio nerd puzzle

Queer, that was the exact story I read and referred to! It really is mind boggling 'eh!

Re: Bio nerd puzzle
