hey hansini...i hope this is not too late (it just might be) but ill try to help with as much bio/chem i remember.

basically the effect on living tissue greatly depends on the pH level of the two chemicals. the stronger, the worse the effect. bases, the rule of thumb is that don't get it on your hand...because it tends to dissolve fat. (the actual chemistry of it alludes me right now....damn songs). that is why all those stuff like draino and stuff, they have really strong bases in them, so that when you pour it down the drain, it breaks down the fats and such taht is stuck to the side of the pipe. also, bases is one of the compounds that makes soap...hence the dirt fighting aspect of it.

like Umar said, acids can cause irritation, inflammation, corrosion, ulceration and chemical burns...again, actual science behind it...i don't remember. your stomach is full of acid...HCL to be exact ...helps with the digestion of foods that are normally not digested. your skin's ph is actually acidid...that is one of the barriers against bacteria and viruses that can enter your skin...basically it kills them.
