Bilingual ...

Are you bilingual? what languages do you speak?

Do you think it helps in ones career progression to be a bilingual?

Re: Bilingual …

***I’m quad-lingual !!! (is that even a word :hehe:)…well basically multilingual !

Let’s see now …English , Pashto , Arabic , Urdu …a spattering of German ( took classes a few years back almost to intermediate level then got bored ) and now I’m trying to learn Spanish and French from Colleague at work !

I think being multilingual is always a positive asset in one’s career and definitely most often in those careers where you deal with a diverse set of clients…like doctors , businessmen etc…not only does it help in impressing your clients/patients/customers but also your employers especially if is the sort of job where you may be one of the few who speak a particular language and makes you indispensible to the job…thus probably improving career prospects.

As a physician for example , it definitely is an asset since I can cater to a wider selection of patients as ultimately everyone feels more at ease in their own tongue and finding a doctor that speaks their language makes one the preferred choice of physician to go to …I’ve always had patients wanting to come back to see me cause I spoke their language.. ***

Re: Bilingual ...

Here in Singapore word bilingual is used for discrimination against Non Chinese minorities.

Whenever job advertisement asking for bilingual means non Chinese need not to apply, thanks god at least government services or MNCs are not involve in this.

As most of small/medium business owned to by Chinese, they prefers Chinese staff in all positions. Only delivery/Store/Parking attendants and other low paying jobs where local Chinese are not keen are open to minorities (mostly Malys or Tamil speaking Indians).

Re: Bilingual ...

english and urdu (yeah yeah also..hindi..as some have indicated)

some arabic since i spent a chunk of my childhood in middle east
some spanish, took classes
and some italian because I studied there

the lack of ongoing practice in all three means that i am weak in all these three, although with exposure they come back. went to morocco and after a few days things were clicking even though the dialect is fairly different. was in italy for work and was able to string sentences.

career wise there has not been a huge advantage or disadvantage, even though i have worked in global companies and in global roles. except at my last company which had many indian Tata consulting contractors who came in for rotation here, thought I would not understand them, and it created some amusing scenarios.
