This is a very famous song by Peter Gabriel, titled, “Biko”. The song was written and sung by Gabriel in remembrance of a South African man who had died while in police custody (during apartheid). Steve Biko was one of the leading voices in apartheid South Africa; early on he had joined many student organizations that fought against apartheid. He became more and more vocal in his opposition to the brutality of the racist policies. The song begins with the lines, September 77 / Port Elizabeth. In late August 1977, in Port Elizabeth (South Africa), Biko had been taken in and detained by the South African police for interrogation; in about three weeks’ time he was in a coma, and on 12 September he passed away while still in police custody. His inquest found that he had died of brain damage. The cover-up into his death caused another uproar.
Anyways, here’s a bit of the song - it’s got an ‘African theme’ to it (whatever that means) so chances are not a lot of individuals may find the song appealing to them at the very first listen.
