His mom can do it but she is not. So what chioce does your husband have? Abandon his grand mother?
Either you talk to your MIL to recognise her responsibilities as a daughter or stop asking/listening to other people. The more you listen to others, the more your and your husband's life gets dificult as it already is.
Remember, Islam makes your life simple and there are conditions in islam when certain actions/things get permissible.
May Allah (swt) make it easy for both of you. Theres certainly a reward for both of you for your good deed. Keep it up!
