Big explosion rocks Peshawar city

**A large explosion has occurred on a busy road in the north-western Pakistani city of Peshawar.**Police told news agencies the blast had occurred near an army checkpoint and that casualties had been reported.

Peshawar has borne the brunt of recent attacks, which have left scores dead. On Tuesday, a blast outside a club for journalists killed three people.

Pakistan has seen a surge in violence since the army began an offensive against the Taliban in Waziristan.

It remains unclear how many people may have been killed or injured in the latest explosion, which struck Peshawar’s Mall Road.

“I can see smoke and injured people lying on the ground,” one witness, Shahid Khan, told the AFP news agency from near the scene.
