Those of you who live in big cities, 1m people plus-what do you like about cities?
I am from a small town, 150,000 people, and I find trips to London annoying. Cramped trains, crowded streets, dirty air. Even whilst at uni nights on the town were often cut short (to 3am) as I got fed up with the conditions.
I dont see the attraction. Ok to visit once every 6 months, but to live?
big city = more ethnic (pakistani)
= more to do on your days off
= can go to the country side for a weekend (cant do that if your living in the countryside anyway)
= BETTER PAY!!!!!!!!
I come from a very small city in South West England and the down side was that the asian community was tiny and hence everyone "interfered" in your business "Kaha Chaleh, kabh wapas anah hai, mujhe bhi lift dedoh" etc etc
Now I live in a big city in NW England and I don't have that much hassle as more scope to live without that - but still with easy enough contact with the community.
Also, bigger city means more career prospects....although downside of that being the commuting and commuters coming off the motorway (M6!) blocking up our roads!!!
I lived in NYC for a couple of years while I worked on wall st. It was the best of the best and the worst of the worst. It was great because I didnt have to deal with much of a commute. I had every ethnic type of food I wanted available almost any time of day or nite. Shows, street fairs, museums, unique shops and shopping. Something to do, something to see every day of the week and any hour of the day or nite. Now I live in a small-ish town, i like this much better but mainly because it much more suits my life now - that of raising the boys. Parks, schools, yard with a swingset out back, bbq grill on the deck. It all depends on your lifestyle and what you want. Big cities do have many attractions, but those attractions need to attract YOU or you wont be happy there.
Big cities do indeed have better career prospects, as much of the business is there. That is the only attraction I can see.
I'd like to sample city living for a year or so soonish, not as a student but in "real life"-work etc.
The BIG city I live in now is the city that I went to UNI in...and yes it is very different living here as a married woman with responsibilities than it was as a student living 5 mins away from the UNI....
Better career prospects
Better educational opportunities
better entertainment options (concerts, shows, sports, exhibitions)
better restaurants, cafe's, places to hang out
Higher candidate pool to find more people who you can click with, friends, lovers, whatever
easier to skip out for teh weekend since major airports are right there. (my bro in London gets last minute flight deals and hops off to spian or portugal etc on a 12 hr notice)
Not sure if better educational opps is true. Many of the best schools in the UK are in the surrounding counties of Oxfordshire and Berkshire. I'd wager about half of the schools in London are under funded and borderline failing.
The more people to meet/find what your looking for, seems the big +.
the statement about better educational opportunities was not specifically for UK, but in general. and by better opportunity I did not necessarily mean better universities.
Living in a arge city you have a better choice among local unis, baed on your interests and grades. you have a more varied choices.
if you are in some po dunk place you only have like one college there, what if the college is either too good for you to get in, or doe snot offer what you want to study or is crap?
and this is not just for college education, but in currentday and age you have to keep up with stuff, and big cities give you a lot more chances for continuing or executive education.
Cities offer options, but at the cost of comfort. For instance one of my little pleasures is to walk by the lake, dirt track and all, enjoying the scenary.
No such peace in London. :(
I will try city living at some point...just to see what all the fuss is about.
so yeah its not like smack dab in westend, but I could be there in 30 mins or so.
A lot of people hate suburbs, I am a huge suburbs fan, I mean you have all the facilities of a big city right there, but you dont have to deal with it.
I live in Chicago, well burbs..thre are several lakes by my house in walkign distance, a running and biking trail, a river to go boating etc. and I can be in downtown chicago in 45 mins. some of my pals live in burbs that are even closer, even my old burb was just 30 mins away from the centr of the city.
yah we can actually afford to send a few of them to other cities.
Chicago has been very good to me, I love this place.
but London is my childhood home, nothing can take its place.
