The Bhutto’s both father and daughter are probably Pakistan’s most 2 popular leaders out of our short history. Why would the army feel the need to thwart them?

It is exactly because of this reason.

Army never wants to allow a popular leader, as they would lose their power, and not be able to fill their pockets with money.
