Re: Bhutto succession will split the party, says tribe leader
Spock, if you insist that Zardari, PPP and their main ringleaders are all honest people, then I've lost complete respect for you.
I certainly do think that Musharraf has made serious errors in the recent past. I've also written on them. I was, and still hold, that letting Benny back into town was one of the worst things he did. No wait, I take that back. That's the second worst thing he did. The ultimate worst thing he did was letting Nawaz back in.
However, I'm a realist. American pressure forced Musharraf to strike a deal with Benazir. I don't view Musharraf as a totalitarian island, who makes decisions as he wills. He's in the middle of a major power shift going on in the middle east and south asia, and its all centered on oil. Right now, Pakistan is risking losing some of its provinces and territories and I'm sure Musharraf knows the grave consequences for Pakistan's future if he doesn't make the STRATEGIC (notice, I didn't say "right") decisions. His current goal is to keep the country together. I hope you realize that Pakistan is once again at risk for losing some of its land. I don't blame him as one person responsible for everything, like you. I keep things in perspective. Some events are absolutely inevitable based on how international events unfold.
I do not support Benazir's return to the country, and look what happened. She made a complete tamasha with all her loudspoken batameez behavior thru the city. Her demands, as described above, to have a 3rd term, to hand over A.Q. Khan, to work with the US's plans on dealing with terrorism in the western provinces, which I suspect do involve changing borders, and promises to let American soldiers into a, may I sternly remind you, SOVEREIGN nation, would have been gravely detrimental to Pakistan.
I may be one of the only ones in the world that heaved a big sigh of relief when she was assasinated. I do believe she was a human being, and I'd have preferred she had lived to see her grandkids OUTSIDE Pakistan. But I'd rather have a dead Benazir than a living one INSIDE Pakistan causing a complete breakdown of the country.
Very good and realistic analysis. It's shame that some people, on this Forum, are acting like idiots and displaying childish 'Mein to nahin manoonga' mentality despite having a full understanding of ground realities. Good work though
