There have been times of high and low for the Bhutto Family. Through times, Bhutto family has always played a very dominant role in the politics of Pakistan. The very first leader of the party, which is an identity of Bhutto family known as PPP (Pakistan Peoples Party), was formed and started by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. The Bhutto family has suffered many casualties at different times of the history of Pakistan.
He led his own legacies just as did other leaders prior to him. Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was an extremely outspoken leader, who always knew his audiences. He addressed people on the issues that matter to the average man. The moto of Bread, Cloth, and Shelter was the slogan that carried the party to the thrones of power. Z.A.B. single handedly deserves the credit for providing a way for Pakistan to acquire and become a Nuclear power.
Z.A.B. would be one of the few leaders who when he spoke carried the message of the people whereever he went whether it was the UN or other world powers.
Benazir Bhutto was a natural politician in the making. She always accompanied her father in all his addresses, rallies, campaign tours, and other affiliated events. She was his beloved daughter who was known as ‘pinky’. She fought on so many fronts stimutaneously, some including inner family conflicts.
Just as all politicians have their ups and down, she did as well. On December 2, 1988 Benazir Bhutto was sworn in as Prime Minister of Pakistan, becoming the first woman to head the government of an Islamic State. In the preceding decade of political struggle, Ms. Bhutto was arrested on numerous occasions; in all she spent nearly 6 years either in prison or under detention for her dedicated leadership of the then opposition Pakistan Peoples Party. Throughout the years in opposition, she pledged to transform Pakistani society by focusing attention on programs for health, social welfare and education for the underprivileged.
Since assuming the office of Prime Minister, Benazir Bhutto has emphasized the need to heal past wounds and to put an end to the divisions in Pakistani society - including reducing discrimination between men and women. Ms. Bhutto has launched a nationwide program of health and education reform.
Benazir Bhutto was born in Karachi in 1953. After completing her early education in Pakistan, she attended Radcliffe College and Oxford University. As well as obtaining a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, she also completed a course in International Law and Diplomacy at Oxford.
Ms. Bhutto is the author of “Foreign Policy in Perspective” (1978) and her autobiography, “Daughter of Destiny” (1989). She received the Bruno Kreisky Award for Human Rights in 1988 and the Honorary Phi Beta Kappa Award from Radcliffe in 1989.
Benazir Bhutto is a woman of courage and conviction and we are proud to acknowledge her with the International Leadership Award. She along being the first ever politician of a Muslim Nation, also is a woman president who voiced concern for womens right in the country of Pakistan. She was a liberal leader who connected with the people on many issues.
PPP has its roots deep within the ranks of people everywhere. Whether it’s the cities, towns, or villages.
She went on a self-exile in 1998 on charges of corruption. She returned once again, as daughter of the nation, and landed in the city of Karachi in October of 2007.
Today…December 27, 2007, she addressed an open rally in the city of Rawalpindi. Little did anyone know, this would become the last time, the daughter of a man whose legacy still live in peoples heart, would soon meet her creator. While waving to her supporters as leaving, she was Shot. Yet another loss for the nation.
We as a humble nation must gather as one, put our differences aside, and do all we can to unite once and for all. The menaces that face our society have stemmed from the roots of very evil which we have given little attention to all this time. We must love each other as countrymen, muslims, and Pakistan alike. To take one’s life is as if an entire nation has been killed.
