Bhudian (Old Women)

I always wonder why in Punjabi language, they call all women Bhudian even when they are 17 years old. I remember when I took my wife to my village first time, this lady came to me and asked me if she is my Bhuddy, my wife did not like it. So, what do you think? I think we need to come up with a new appropriate word to replace Bhudian. I need support of all Punjabi Bhudian on this.

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

It's an affectionate term, most Punjabi words do sound harsh though. Punjabi is not as loving as the Urdu language.

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Not just that, but my grandma insisted to her doctor that “Asi tu Kasi aaN”… “I am younger than 80”. There’s something wrong with Punjabi KakiaN.

Johny. I support you, whatever you come up with.

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

It is a fact that budhay people are a lil sathya-ay howay. Since majority of the women are sathyai howi too..hence you can see how the term budhi is related.

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

First of all, the word is "budhi", as Fayz said.. and second, AFAIK, its only used for "wife".

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Faisal, what Johny is saying is that Punjabi is a screwed up language tilted towards males. If wife can be referred to as “Budhi” why isn’t one’s Husband referred to as Budha?

I am a Punjabi, and love everything about my heritage and culture… but this Budhi term has got to go. It makes us look very bad.

I wonder if Arabs call their wives as Khatoon-ul-Zaeef.

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

I agree. The first time I heard a friend ask another friend "teri budhi da ki haal hai?", it did sound a bit weird.

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Let's face it piraaow, we punjabis don't really respect our women. We give them the worst possible nicknames and associate anything feminine with something lower than us men.

Phrases as,"oh tu tey apni run dai thallay lagaeya aiN"..."most of the gaalees have a woman in it too... it's just so sad.

Yours truly pathetic,
fg

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Actually it otherway around in USA, I don't think any american husbend will dare to call his wife OLD women but I noticed that all wives always refer to their husdends as OLD MAN. I wonder why?

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Johny,,, you are a born complainer...

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Agree… what is this deal with BehnCD. Why cant there be a BhaiCD also.

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Madhanee get over it. Punjabi s fine. Dont you go around proposing changes to something that has survived the test of time. BTW "teri budhi da ki haal ai? meri budhi aj kaal bachyan dey nal bahut masroof rehndi ai"

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Budhi na huyee Gaaye(COW) ho gayee.

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

FB, proper term in Pubjabi will be Gaan for Cow, Majj for buffalo.
BTW: What do you call your "budhi"? Begum?

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Yes..there are other names also but are not apporprite for audience here.

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Re: Bhudian (Old Women)

Well havent you guys heard men in amreeka refer to their wives as Old Lady. This happens when two guys are usually talking w/o the old ladies present. I mean a guy wouldnt intro his wife to his pal as "Meet Susan, My old lady".

Similarly, in Punjabi the word Budhi is used between male friends, for the most part. And I have yet to hear a guy intro his wife to friend like this "Ainu mil, aye meri budhi Meedhaan"
