God knows what the reason was but it had something to do with British police system and how they anhillated the cult.

The cult believed they were born from the sweat of Kali (???) and killing was a necessary sacrifice so Kali herself doesn’t become bloodthirsty but I can’t be certain we’re talking about the same Thugs but I can’t think of any other prominent thug system.

You have reached there. There was a system of Thugs before and during British rule in India. They used to worship Kali = Durga, but they called the diety as Bhawani. Some historians believe that all thugs (be Muslims / Hindus) worshiped Bhawani.
