Re: Bhawani Junction and Thugs?
Bhawani Junction is a Urdu / Hindi phrase which means "a long stop".
Bhawani Junction is a railway station in Punjab . Junction means the meeting place for different routes. in old days, the trains used to make a long stop/halt their for change of locomotives, filling water in the locomotive and coaches, drivers and train running staff. any stop in those days of more than 30 minutes [average 45 minutes] was called a Bhawani Junction. in Indian Railways time table, **Junction is abbreviated as "Jn."

now, it's not the case. trains don't make that long stops anymore.
there was a movie, Bhowani Junctio, by this name.
btw, the name of Bhawani Junction has been changed to some other name which i don't know.*
Re: Bhawani Junction and Thugs?
Who was Bhawani? Any character / Goddess from Hindu scriptures?
Re: Bhawani Junction and Thugs?
yes...Hindus in India often say, "Jai Bhawani" ... there must be a god of Hinduism who is referred to in this salutation. he is god of 'strength/power' i suppose.
Re: Bhawani Junction and Thugs?

nope...Bhawani is a masculine name. :)
Re: Bhawani Junction and Thugs?
Bhawani is a goddess.
Are there any other popular names of this Goddess? What powers she get and why it was popular among Thugs.
Re: Bhawani Junction and Thugs?
From my limited knowledge, Bhawani Devi is probably goddess of courage / valor etc. Daakus traditionally have worshiped such goddesses to gain strength.
I suspect these goddesses are somehow related to Parvathi Devi, who probably is at the head of the hierarchy in terms of courage etc. Parvathi is Shiva's spouse. That is all I know. And some of this may be incorrect.

Just saw this. My previous post addresses some of this.
In the South, they use the all encompassing term Devi. They would say Devi ' s temple. And I get confused as to which Devi they refer to.
Over the years, after connecting some dots, I gathered the Devi represents all associations with Parvathi and the associated goddesses of courage referred to in the previous post.
Am sure the others such as calypsodysic kaur etc are more knowledgeable.
Re: Bhawani Junction and Thugs?
Are we talking about the Thugs who followed the cult of Kali? I remember reading about them in Pakistan Studies class.

God knows what the reason was but it had something to do with British police system and how they anhillated the cult.
The cult believed they were born from the sweat of Kali (???) and killing was a necessary sacrifice so Kali herself doesn't become bloodthirsty but I can't be certain we're talking about the same Thugs although I can't think of any other prominent thug system.

You have reached there. There was a system of Thugs before and during British rule in India. They used to worship Kali = Durga, but they called the diety as Bhawani. Some historians believe that all thugs (be Muslims / Hindus) worshiped Bhawani.
