Bhatta?

Which language this word ‘Bhatta’ (extortion) belongs?

I read that in Punjabi, there is a word ‘Bhatta’ for lunch. :hmmm:

bhatta is a Hindi word which means "commission"...some salesmen in India work on bhatta basis.

bhatta also means allowance. Daily Bhatta means Daily allowance that traveling salesmen, politicians and government civil servants receive while they travel for official work.

Commission ke liye koi word nahin Urdu main. At least, Bhatta is not official urdu / Hindi word for Commission. Never heard it in Hindi movies or read in classic urdu Literature. Though, Ghulam Abbas, Manto, etc wrote lot of stories about Clerk Babus

i have heard it that's why i mentioned it. may be it's more common in India. it's quite commonly used there.

other Urdu words are: Dastoor, dalaali and aaRhat [Hindi]

It is a hindi word, which explains why in Pakistan it originated from Karachi, from the urdu speaking migrant community. Never heard this word in Punjab, until it was popularized in Karachi.
Bhatta, technically means daily allowance, as KKF pointed out above. Hafta is also a term commonly used in commission structures, perhaps referring to weekly commissions. Not sure what the terms for monthly or yearly commissions is.
