Bhairvi Tarana : An intro

Just wanted to share a peculiar piece of recording: its a Bhairvi Tarana by the American born Warren Senders.

The Raag:
Bhairvi is a A morning raga that is traditionally also played at
the end of concerts, regardless of time. There are a large number of folk, arabic, pushto and filmi tunes in bhairvi apart from thumris and ghazals. Bhairvi can be perceived to be a samundar of music by itself.

The Performer :
Warren Senders is a talented composer/musician who has studied and rendered Hindustani music for over 20 years. The leader of the indo-jazz ensemble Anti-Gravity, Senders is a member of the New England Conservatory faculty and a Learning Through Music specialist who applies a rich background in Indian, African, and Western music toward cross-cultural aspects of learning through music programs in public elementary schools

The Artform:
The tarana genre of vocal singing , rhythmic accompaniment is important in this fast-paced singing style that uses sargams and vocables lime na, ta, re, da, ni, odani, tanom, yalali, yalalom. While many dismiss the text of tarana as meaningless, there are others who point to its Persian ancestry and the possibly mystical nature of the sounds.

Tarana singing is attributed to Amir Khusro, as are most musical forms that cannot trace their ancestry. Legend places Amir Khusro at a performance of raga Kadambak by Gopal Naik. Khusro allegedly remembered the music but not text, and created the tarana through a merging of bols from the tabla, the sitar or the mridang. However, since the sitar and tabla were not in existence during Khusro’s lifetime, this story cannot be validated!

A longer realplayer recording is also available at the following link : http://www.sawf.org/audio/bhairavi/warrensenders.ram

Re: Bhairvi Tarana : An intro

I listened to it on random loop all day. Is there a way I can download the full mp3?

Good to know you dig the vibe. You can listen to the longer clip using realplayer and link provided above.

hmmm download !! You will probably have to record it using some audio software from the realplayer clip. Thats how we have gone about it, using Jet Audio to simply record while the realplayer etc. plays the clip online. Alternatively you may be able to pick up played file from Temp internet folder on your drive (does not always work though).
