[Beware] Plasma TV alert

***TELEVISION cricket and tennis coverage is making a lasting impression on plasma screens. ***
The logos used by Channel 7 and Channel 9 during long days of sporting action are burning themselves into the delicate digital monitors. With the hi-tech TVs costing thousands of dollars, some owners have threatened legal action saying their screens have been ruined.

Viewer Wayne Spiers says he bought a $3000 plasma screen on Christmas Eve. It now bears Nine’s logo in the right-hand corner, a legacy of the Boxing Day test, which his family watched on and off for five days. It was matched by a Channel 7 logo last week, which appeared after one day of watching tennis. Mr Spiers, of Melbourne, said: “It was silly of me to assume Channel 7 and 9 would care enough about their viewers to ensure their logos wouldn’t damage our TVs.” Screen burn occurs when onscreen graphics - displayed in one spot for a long time - become seared into the plasma. A ghost image then lingers on other programs, even on rival stations. Stations can avoid the damage by using a watermarked logo, in a transparent shape that adopts the colours on screen.

A Seven spokesperson said: “Turning down the contrast on your picture will reduce the problem.” A Channel 9 spokesman would not comment.

Looks like the Australians take their sports extra seriously, with some of them actually burning the logos of TV channels into their brand new plasma screens from too much viewing of the same channel. Fascinating, really. I’ve had a plasma for over 2 years and I’ve never had this problem. But Aussie Wayne Siers claims that after buying a $3000 plasma TV on Christmas Eve (that’s THIS Christmas Eve, by the way) it now has the Channel 9 logo burned into the right-hand corner from watching the same sports show for 5 days. After that, it was matched by a Channel 7 logo from one day of tennis viewing. Way to go, Wayne. That may be a record. And has anyone told you to get out of the house for while? Get some fresh air? Let that be a lesson to all of you sports fiends. Stick with a CRT if you have to watch that much. Or even better, head to the pub and watch *them *ruin *their *$3k TV!  :cb:

Re: [Beware] Plasma TV alert

Two things.

The problem can be easily avoided if the station removes the logo for the duration of commercial breaks. All US channels are knowledgable about this issue and hence the burn-in doesn't happen.

Secondly, once burnt in, the ghost image will weaken and eventually go away after a few weeks. In US the biggest culprit is Prime TV, since they never remove their logo at all. Most early-adopter desis have the Prime TV logo burnt on their plasmas.

Interestingly, I had heard that newer plasma technologies have solved this problem as well.

Re: [Beware] Plasma TV alert

I am glad SXRD does not have burn-in effect

Re: [Beware] Plasma TV alert

Most of the channels have started using semi-transparent logos which help in avoiding the image-retention issue.

Re: [Beware] Plasma TV alert

ecent channels like GEO been using either transparent or logos changing at set intervals. It's people like ARY who cause the problem. You also get screen burn on CRT but as easily. Plasma is vunerbale mainly in the first 1000 hours of use.

Re: [Beware] Plasma TV alert

Well! Its clearly defined in the manuals and ways to prevent it. Mine is Panasonic 42" and its recomended to change 'such' channels frequently during 'breaking-in' period for few hundred hours,,,,

Re: [Beware] Plasma TV alert

Mine is a Pana 42" as well. No problems with that at all.
