**The incident occurred this morning on National Freeway 1 in Taiwan. According to cna.com.tw, a box truck carrying “salad and breakfast ingredients” lost control and flipped over.
While the driver of the truck stood on the side of the road waiting for assistance,
a Tesla Model 3 came into the picture driving in the inside-most lane straight for the truck. Despite the truck downed on the highway in the middle of a clear and sunny day,
the Tesla did not flinch (THE CAR WAS ON AUTO PILOT)and plowed into the top of the box.
Only one person was in the Model 3, and he was not seriously injured. at the LAST Minute He applied the brakes!**
Well they do, but it’s complicated. Computers are not like humans. Some tasks that are incredibly difficult for humans, are pretty easy for computers. For example, calculating the sum of two 100 digit numbers. But there are also some tasks that are incredibly easy for humans, yet pretty hard for computers. For example, facial recognition. And the list is pretty long. But computers are making up for those deficiencies pretty fast. I’m sure slowly but surely, self driving cars will have a lower rate of accidents per mile than an expert human driver.
It is like those early bridges that used to collapse. The builders didn’t give up because they were unsafe. Rather, they learned from each mistake which led us to today’s reliable bridges.
You couldn't pay me to get behind a self-driving car. There are just so many variables on the road, so many split second decisions that have to be made and I feel more comfortable with the driver having the control. Tech vs human does make for an interesting debate though.
