Better to find work on campus or off campus?

I’ll be starting Ryerson this fall and I’m hoping I’d be able to change my major to HR from Management.

Currently, I work on campus (at college) assisting students and grads with their resumes and cover letters, plus a bit of job search.

I’m hoping I could land with a similar job at Ryerson (on campus). In case, I don’t, should I settle for something else on campus or should I look for work off campus?

I’m hoping I could land with a position in employment counselling/assistance later on.

if ur gonna be living on campus..i'd say it'd b best to work on-campus too. call up their office and see what positions are open!

Re: Better to find work on campus or off campus?

Under grads can earn 2000.00 per academic yr ( 2 semsters) so, if working 10 - 20 hours per week, during the semester is easy for u, given ur course load (15 credit hours or less), then u should work on using thsi money.

i have work studies, in my office at an education dept at a good univ.

normally people are nice to students and the work involves bringing stuff to another office, typing up small projects, mailing letters or sitting at teh front desk to greet the visitors.

if u think u can use the same amount of time, working on an internship which will look good on ur resume, esp if it relates to ur field of study and also pays a bit = to the work study pay for the same number of hours.

then, go for that internship.

the benefit of on campus work is , a) it is on campus, which means with classes, u can easily walk to ur work study place... & b) environment is academic. from admissions to library to computer lab...
but if u need work experience in ur field then finding work of campus is do able

best,

dush

Re: Better to find work on campus or off campus?

Ryerson is in downtown, so working off campus (somewhere nearby) would be similar to working on-campus. But any (field-related) work experience would be helpful, inshallah.

Re: Better to find work on campus or off campus?

I guess the issue shouldn't be on or off campus job, but rather a job that can go on your resume. If you get a professional type of job that can go on your resume off campus, it will be hundred times better than a non-professional type of job on campus. Ofcourse, if you can get something good, according to your field on campus, that will be the best case scenario.

Re: Better to find work on campus or off campus?

I'm hoping I could land with something related to HR, so that it could help me later on. I've tried browsing through a few websites, but I couldn't really find relevant part-time jobs in downtown.

Re: Better to find work on campus or off campus?

Sadiyah, I think the smarter thing for you to do is to approach companies yourself and present yourself as a possible intern/candidate. Maybe check your local employment agencies / headhunters and tell them that you are interested in joining them as an HR intern. Ofcourse its in your best interest if its a paid internship. You will be surprised that they may actually go for it, and if nothing else they will remember you as a possibility for future.

Re: Better to find work on campus or off campus?

Sadiyah it all also depends on how much course load you will have per semester. Since this is your first year in university, I will recommend you find a job on-campus. It is not easy to deal with 3 or 4 courses and plus the job. It may take you few months to a year to adjust to working and studying at university. I have done both on-campus and off campus. And obvioulsy working on-campus was so much better and convenient. Working out side the campus wasted so much of my time and made me more tired. I don't think you should be worried about working in large companies as yet. That is just too much pressure for a freshy. It will be a priority to concentrate on studies and gain some experience on campus whenever possible. I used to think that my job experience on campus is not worth much comparatively to working outside. That is absolutely not true. It also depends on what type of job you have on-campus.

Re: Better to find work on campus or off campus?

Jal_Pari, I'm hoping I could find relevant work on campus, insha'Allah. I'm not concerned about working for large or small companies. I'm just hoping I'm able to find relevant work on/off campus.

My first preference would be to find relevant work on campus, I may have to look outside if I'm unable to find something relevant, or I may even settle for something irrelevant on campus.

Re: Better to find work on campus or off campus?

Depends on the benefits. Apply to positions that seem interesting - on and off campus, and then choose from the people who want you. :smokin:

Re: Better to find work on campus or off campus?

I was able to secure a job on campus in a relevant field, alhamdulillah. I thought I'd update, as I was inquiring about it earlier on.

Re: Better to find work on campus or off campus?

Congratulations...im trying to do the same this year...its just convenient...
