From my following of tennis which is limited, I thought William sisters gave a lot of competition and excitement in the field of tennis. Graf, Seles and Sharapova were another top players. There was a lot of competition.

she was so good. But at peak of her career she got stabbed by stafy graph's fan during a match.
Stayed out of the court for a while, I saw her first match after that. She was so conscious of what ever movement was happening behind her back.
Chris Evert, BJK, Navratilova, Steffi Graff were all amazing players and really dominated the game during their time. But when they played the game was so much different than what it is today. The Williams Sisters really changed the dynamic of women's tennis. They made it all about power and big serves. Also, they brought so much more excitement to women's tennis. I think Serena Williams could've really become the best of all time, if it wasn't for injuries and of course the year off due to the death of her sister etc.
I think it's a pity that Henin announced her retirement cuz she really is a great talent and could've dominated for a while. The #1 pos. has like flip flopped between players like a 100 times since she retired.
