Best UK city for an asian graduate?

Finally graduated from a small time university in scotland and have a chance to move to larger places in the UK. So which cities are “happening” with a pakistani prospective? ie racism

dont wana go to london or birminghan as herd too many indians in there. the cities i was thinking of were:-

  1. glasgow
  2. manchester
  3. edinburgh
  4. newcastle
  5. leeds
  6. cardiff
  7. liverpool
  8. NOT bradford!! lol

wot u guys think?? would be good to have opinions/suggestions posted.

thanx

Re: Best UK city for an asian graduate?

Question is .. what field are u in? what do u want to do in ur life? what are ur priorities? There are loads of factors to choose a place it comes to moving, mere pakistani population is the least cause to move.

Re: Best UK city for an asian graduate?

Hiya....

I am new to GS, and just read your post............
have you thought about Preston? It is England's newest city, not too big and not too small.....I studied here at Uni (being originally from the South West of England) and then moved back here when I got married.

There's a lot to do, different residential areas, some are more heavily populated with "apne waleh" and some aren't (yet!)

Jobs wise, there is a lot generally IN Preston, but also, Manchester and Lancaster are easily within commuting distance.

Have a look on the Internet for some city guide to Preston - Lancashire

Good luck whatever you decide!

Re: Best UK city for an asian graduate?

hello,
i will be working in a hospital and my priorities are to go to a big city with friendly people. therefore birmingham is a no no as heard some tensions exist against asians in there.
my application deadline is early decembers and at the moment my choices are as follows.
1) glasgow
2) manchester
3) liverpool
4) bristol
5) newcastle
could i get more info from any apna living in liverpool and bristol plz??

Re: Best UK city for an asian graduate?

I used to live near Bristol and do still sometimes visit there.
You have to be careful with Bristol as there are some very undesirable areas (eg St Pauls is one of them!!)

Bristol does have a good asian/pakistani population though - not too much and not too little..ie not overpowering!

Bristol has good transport links by plane, train and car as well.

There have been tensions between the gora's and asians in thepast, but I think these days, everywhere you go there will be some tensions....

One great advantage with Bristol is that if you ever want to escape for a relaxing weekend or something, you can be in the country side within an hour!!

Don't know much about Liverpool - only ever been there shopping!!!

Good Luck

Re: Best UK city for an asian graduate?

u might be saying not bradford bt trust me its the right place...all the saddos r movin outta here n the gud ones r in mainly bcoz its gettin a major makever in sense of new city centre , more luxury apartments n best off all lots of pakistanis n its getting expensive ...where we live is a beautiful location ...dnt always listen to the negative things we do have positive things i hd knw i have bin livinh here all my life

Re: Best UK city for an asian graduate?

I had some of the best times at Bradford. It's not as big or rich as other mainly red brick universities you mentioned, but a much nicer, more relaxed feel.

Birmingham does have a large Indian population, you will find most studying as miedics (no suprise). However the campus is of mainly white and chinesse people. Tensions do exist but not in the student areas. Tensions between ethnic groups exists in any of the above cities you mentioned. Infact MUCH worse in Glasgow than others.

it all depends on what you want from university. Birmingham has the reputation, money but I miss the relaxed student atmosphere of Bradford. Too gorafied for me.

Re: Best UK city for an asian graduate?

Im a doc- and i just started my F1 training in Manchester August 06. I studied in Liverpool, and moved cos of the lack of culture....LOL....and ironically they gonna be celebrating Capital of Culture 08...should be Crapital of culture!

Manchester- is ace-good mix of asians and whites- but not overly burdened....(except wimmy rd) U even get the odd paki patient- and it always feels good 2 help ur own ppl.

I realise that this comes late as r deadline was monday-but glad 2 see u didnt put down Liverpool! Dunno about the Scottish cities....but all i can say is well done for Manchester! all the best!
