Best Schools in Canada?

**** msg edited

salams guys

i need specific recommendations about programs in canadian schools [must be respectable programs in good schools] that are a mix between computer science/education/e-learning/human computer interaction/finance/business

any interesting combination of these…

Umar Talib has given some cool suggestions below…looking into those…

any more suggestions guys?

thanks
irem

My picks of good all-rounder schools, in no particular order:

  1. University of Toronto
  2. University of British Columbia
  3. University of Waterloo
  4. McGill University

Specifically for grad studies in IS, I’d go for one of the following, again in no particular order:

  1. UBC: Sauder school of Business offers an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in MIS

  2. Queens University: Business school offers a 12 month M.Sc. in Management with a concentration in IS, and also a Ph.D. with an MIS concentration

  3. McMaster University: DeGroote School of Business offers an M.B.A. in e-Business and Management of Innovation and New Technology, and a Ph.D. in Information Systems (this is what I’m doing, with my subject area in Knowledge Management)

Also Irem, the single most popular source of Canadian Universities ranking is Macleans… check out:
http://www.macleans.ca/universities/index.jsp
They however, do not provide specific rankings w.r.t. grad school etc.

hey, wow, thanks so much :)

Umar is probably your best advice on this matter. Personally I only know of U of T and Waterloo and they are both very good (waterloo probably more techie and U of T more rounded). Also take into consideration where you will be living before you decide to accept anything. Masters and Phds take time it is really depressing to be both out of touch with family as well as away from people. U of T in this respect is probably your best bet since it is in downtown Toronto.

Waterloo is about 3 hrs from Toronto but in a rather small town.

I guess.

  1. McGill
  2. University of Toronto
  3. UBC

Hey all...

Irem,
anytime :) - hope the information was helpful !

hmcq,

U of T and Waterloo are indeed very well rounded universities but more so for the undergrads. When it comes to I.S. unfortunately both universities tend to be more on the technical side, as both offer their grad programs under the dept. of Comp. Sci.
This is unlike UBC, McMaster and Queens which offer the I.S. program as a Business specialization. From my experience, the program with the Business departments tend to be richer cuz you have faculty who have Ph.D.s' in their respective areas, be it Artificial Intelligence, Information Sciences etc. and also have their M.B.A.s'. This gives students more value-added as they learn technology more from a business case perspective.

digitalsurgeon,
I am a Lecturer at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, and from what I've heard/read, SFU and WLU are very much alike... both of them are teaching universities and not necessarily research universities. That being said, both are moving towards a research focus. At WLU, we're starting a Ph.D. program at the School of Business and Economics and I know at SFU, there are plans for a new graduate program at Segal sometime in 2005. In my opinion, universities like SFU and WLU are well positioned to deliver a personalized educational experience at the undergraduate level! However, in my humble opinion, or call it a gross generalization, people who come out of larger universities such as UBC or U of T tend to be a little more mature in their real world undertakings.

thanks everyone :-)

Depends, different Universities are better in some departments than others. For engineering or medical, McGill would be a good choice. Concordia's John Molson School of Business is a great business school as well. Concordia had a better IT department than McGill did (at least back then). U of T is also a great University.

^

thanks :-)

Don’t forget the West!!

U of Saskatchewan is a growing school, focusing immensily on Medical research/pharmaceutical. They are becoming a better Ph.D institution, with many grants for research in the medical field.

U of Alberta is a fairly big school, with a good Business program. Also their engineering program is not too shaby.

Same goes for U of Calgary, which is fairly good with biochemistry, and if I’m not mistaken Engineering?

Although nothing beats U of T. :disgust:

^^ thanks :-)

Paindus. University of Western Ontario!

Waterloo is excellent for technology, but Queens is the best for business.

lol hsk thanks :D

From what I can say in this thread, irem you’ve been listed almost every university in Canada. :hehe:

Ok ok.. half.

For reputation you cant beat U of T (just look at how many people here have mentioned it). And reputation often also implies ease of landing jobs because the university is better know to people and generally there are more opportunities to network with others from the same college.

shook-run :D

Irem, youre a stanford graduate, I think you should do your masters from an equally reputable and prestigious instituition.

thanks for the advice Spock. hmm. i am still thinking about things. i dont know. after going thru undergrad ur perspective on many things changes n ur priorities shift a bit. i think id prefer to stay in bay area california even if i get into a more prestigious out of cali school coz i have friends there, feel comfortable there, n love that area. and if not bay area then atleast cali. or else canada maybe coz i have family there.
getting used to a new place in undergrad all by myself was difficult so i think doing it all over again might be really tough n i wana skip that ordeal. just for going to a big name school its not worth it coz the charm of going to a big name school is not that appealing anymore coz alhamdulillah i already got a chance to go to a great school. alhamdulillah. Allah ka bohot bohot shukar hae Us ne ye moqa dya.
u'll be surprised to see that a lot of big school undergrads dont necessarily do grad school from big schools unless they have plans to go into academia. from the outside it seems like one should but life's all about different experiences and everyone has different priorities init.
right now my priority is not to go to another big name school but its k if i get into masters then to have an easy relaxed time, maybe work on the side as well, and also get a degree in the meantime. i dont want to be completely devoted to academics and for them to be very very demanding for me right now. maybe in the future if circumstances allow i'll apply for a masters or MBA or PhD or something to a big school again if at that point in life i am craving to do that. right now tho im not.
waise i'm late in applying for this yr for most places. so lets c what happens. i'm still thinking abt things n if i wana go to grad school right now. i'm working right now tho so alhamdulillah have something to occupy my time. khayr, thanks for telling me ur opinion :)
