17/18" screen, am not too bothered about it being heavy.. Any recommendations?

I know apple has discontinued them but I have to say 17 MacBook pro this thing is beautifull and very light compare to windows OS computers
Buy HP mainly because I like their warranty. They ship you an empty box, you ship back your laptop & within 5 business days its returned to you repaired. HP laptops also have awesome sound, something other laptops lack imo.
As far as specs go...
Core i3: entry level, web surfing, word processing, etc...
Core i5: mid-level,
Core i7: performance series, extreme gaming, photoshop, etc
These are for Intel CPU's; Not familier with AMD's current offerings. Get something with at least 6GB RAM & 640GB Hard Drive. USB 3.0 is out now so perhaps a laptop which supports USB 3.0 (you'll also need 3.0 devices for the faster speeds otherwise its backwards compatible with 2.0).
You also qualify for an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro when it's released next year. The cost of the upgrade is $15.

Check Samsung Series 7 gaming laptop (almost all the gaming laptops are around 17 inches)
Asus G74, G75 17 inch gaming laptops
Or MSI GE70, GT780 etc

Not sure of the real reason, my guess would be that it got expensive for people to buy, it got over $2000 and that's was just basic model.

The sales for the 17" were really plummeting. But it was a really lovely piece of equipment.

I had a 17" Macbook Pro briefly.. I sold it on Amazon cos I just didn't 'gel' with it and felt more comfortable with a Vaio.. Didn't really give it much of a chance tho..

I think Dell has them too, though I didn't have a good experience with Studio 17 (returned and got a Vaio 17 incher with blu ray). The dell indian disservice centers are horrible as the first person that you would talk to has no clue what he or she is effin talking about.
I wouldn't recommend Vaio considering the turn around time could be a month or more for minor fixes to your computer, though they try to entice you with free anti virus and lojack if you talk to the western customer service. I had an asus netbook and it was pretty good so I would recommend them as well, but definitely look into lenovo. My old ideapad had a subwoofer built in and had sound that better than an hp.
