What do you think which is the best Laptop brand now a days, I am interested in buying a new one and bit confused.
Here in KSA, Toshiba has the higher ranking prices, Sony Viao is also nice but too expensive.

Re: Best Laptop Brand
Toshiba Satellite, hands-down! the quality u get for the price can't be beaten...
Sonys are good too...but a bit expensive...
IBM/Lenovo are great, but aren't that appealing cuz of the work-horse looks...
HP/Compaqs have improved a great deal as well...they used to be pretty crappy earlire, but over the last 2 yrs, they've really improved...
And them comes Dell/Acer/Gateway/all others :p
Re: Best Laptop Brand
Apple
. Buy a MACBook Pro and you'll enter a new world of exceptional hardware. No noise whatsoever, laptops doesn't even get warm. Besides it runs Windows now and all the resource consuming apps for windows actually fly on MACBook Pro.
IBM
. Thinkpad is the King of PC World. Even a year old second hand one is better than most of the new crap you find these days. Why? The hardware technology underneath is nothing less than great.
HP/Compaq
. Decent and cost effective. You can always open the laptop and make upgrades yourself. The parts are cheap and easily available on ebay. So if their support doesn't have something you still have a backup.
Sony
. Good looking laptops but gets so hot sometimes that you can fry an egg on them. The newer models might have solved this problem but the one I bought just two years ago have this problem. They also get noisy once they are hot or at startup. Hardware is alright nothing fancy. Just remember they are actually a consumer electronics company who started making laptops so they look fancy but under the hood there is nothing great going on.
Dell
. Can't go wrong with dell. They are average but very reliable. To keep the hardware cost low they don't go overboard but the integration at hardware level is better than most. If I can't find an IBM, I would buy a dell any day over all other laptop brands.
Toshiba
Based on my personal experiene, I don't trust toshiba whatsoever. Reasons?
. They have a history of heat sink issues.
. They use very cheap material in their laptops. Some of their models actually use desktop processors giving birth to a million issues and a higher chance for hardware failure.
Gateway
. Decent but they are extremely noisy. Basically nothing speical, they are just anyother laptop you see out there. A whole bunch of hardware slapped together and ready to be sold as a laptop.
Acer
. Price competitor hence cheap stuff. Bad investment if you ask me unless you go with TravelMates.
Re: Best Laptop Brand
i have hp pavilion dv2000 for about a year and a half and im pretty happy with it.. absolutely no problem watsoever.. runs really smoothly ..
Re: Best Laptop Brand
yeah i got toshiba sattelite and im pretty happy with it
i have it for like 1 and half year and its good
Re: Best Laptop Brand
Dells/IBMs are good but they are ugly, so if I get it as work laptop from my employer I'd be happy but buying one NO NO.
The last lappy I bought last month is a Toshiba Satellite and I am very happy with it. Before that I had Compaq X1020US and its still working perfectly fine with Ubuntu running on it. In my Junk I still have PIII 1.0 Ghz Vaio still running Windows 2000 (gave to children to play around with it). Professionally I have used Dells/HP/IBM and must say cannot complain about anyone of them.
As a conclusion I'd say it doesn't matter what name is written on the lappy, it matters whats inside.

In K.S.A... The best one goes as Toshiba and then HP...
IBM is the best laptop, but in K.S.A. its hardly available in the consumer market. I m using t42 for over 2 and half years and still its very good than most of the newer ones.
Last month I bought an HP laptop from Jarir Stores ( while they had a great promotion). Its pretty good too.
Re: Best Laptop Brand
Two options:
IBM / Lenovo: The best work horse you will find. Everything is designed for a reason and put together like a tank. No other manufacturer produces laptops to last as long as these yet be so productive. The T and X series make use of magnesium/titanium casings and the newer T61's have a roll cage too. With the amount of abuse business users like me exert on them they work and last. Warranty is the best of any too. The only drawback is the screens. Not designed with glossy finishes, most business users prefer this as you don get as much glare so actually easier to read text. But not as good for multimedia. I have a T42p with a IPS (flexview) panel which literally pisses over any other laptop in terms of screen colour reproduction. Best keyboard ever on a laptop. Shame I cant find one for a desktop as good. I think the design is a classic. never needed changing. Designed to run Linux in mind too. Who needs flashing lights everywhere?
Macbook. The choice is yours. These too use ALPS keyboards similar to IBM. Nice design and run OSX. Well thought out bit of hardware and software. Nothing else quite as well integrated. In terms of resilience to abuse not on par with a T/X series thinkpad but I would buy one still. You can dual boot with windows no problem.
Edit: My next laptop will probably be a mac. As good as Thinkpads are I am forced to buy Vista, and we all know Vista is just rubbish. I will probably keep my T42 for XP use and Linux for the odd pen test job. Desktop is Linux only anyway.
NIce discussion
& Nice info
Very happy to see that
infect most of the people only has the experience what they used
If someone didn't use another brand, how can he/she tell
Still thankful, unfortunatly my brother went to market without telling me and purchased an Acer Extensa 5620z
After buying we find some issues with it & we try to sell it 2nd hand, If I manage to sell it I will go for a toshiba because more votes goes to it.

Sorry to know that ACER thing.
I bought TOshiba Sattelite A300-14S for my dad last week for SR 3790 from Jarir. Its was the latest, and I think its a pretty good deal.
It has T5550 Processor ( 2.0 Ghz Core 2 DUO). 2 GB RAM, 200 GB hdd and all other necessary stuff, like Wifi, Infrared, Bluetooth, Gigabit NIC/modem. DVD writer and builin CAM,memroy card reader, S-Video Output..
My company replaced my T42 with a new T61 yesterday. ;)... Its very nice as well, Intel T7500 ( 2.2 Ghz Core 2 DUO ) with 2 GB RAM and all other features.
I must say that I have worked on Dell, HP and Siemens. I would only rate latest HP to be good enough, rest DELL and Siemens were not upto the mark.

Nice system, but my budget is 2400 to 2700 SR
I dont want to spent money on these laptops & mobiles every year, last year I purchased one notebook in 3700/-
its current value is SR 2000/-
I sold my old one in 2000 & intend to buy the one within my budget, may be next year it will be down to 1800
That's affordable deal

well Yasir, the problem is that Visa does not work well on configs lower than this.. At least T5500 is the processor that makes it work. else T2500 is just horrible.
Check your PM.
