best formula?

baby is on Enfamil A+ right now at the recommendation of his pead. problem is, it makes his poo experience uncomfortable… he strains and cries and we end up giving him gripe water to ease him so he can pass it. and then its usually a mustardy yellow color with white bits in it and a diaper full. he poos twice a day.

i’ve heard good things about nestle/gerber goodstart and was wondering if that, or any other, is better for baby? what have you moms used or supplemented with?

his pead said we can try goodstart and to keep her posted on his progress.

Re: best formula?

I used Enfamail for both kids. Baby Poo looks different for breasfed and formula fed babies. We also tried the Enfamil Gentlease but really couldn't see the difference. Doc said these were basically marketing gimicks. She gradually did fine on the regular Enfamil as she made the trasition from nursing to formula.

Re: best formula?

We used Similac Advanced with Immune Support without any issues, until there was a recall. Then we switched to Enfamil Premium (they have the newborn and infant lines). Enfamil is usually pretty popular and well-established.

Not sure about his constipation tho. Aren't there specific ones to help with that?

Re: best formula?

It is actually normal for a newborn to make faces and grunt while passing stool and gas. Unless baby has hard pellets as stool its not constipation.

Re: best formula?

If his poo has moisture in it.... He is just fine... Give him time to adjust to the formula...dont change too fast. Tbh...all formulas are the same...if u dont count the special needs one like acid reflux, constipated baby, hungry baby etc.... It just depends on what suits ure baby.... I would say keep an eye on the poo...as long as he isnt pooping pellets... Its fine. Babies grunt a whole lot... :DOn a side note...i started off with nutramagin but that was EXPENSIVE...its whats used at the hospital... We moved on towards nan which was awesome.... But then had to switch over to enfamil ar cuz midget had acid relux....

Re: best formula?

Sahar, do u know why was there a recall for similac advance? I m using it for my twins, but I haven’t heard of any such thing? I have only been using it for a month though and the ped knows I am using it, but didn’t advise against it.

Re: best formula?

the recall was last year…sometime in September I think and was because of contamination with beetle parts or sth like that.I had to switch to Enfamil as well for my then 6 mth old daughter.I continued with Enfamil.
Similac was again available in stores after a few months. So if you bought it just now I am pretty sure you are fine because all the recalled formula was removed from shelves and not sold.

Re: best formula?

I've heard good things about goodstart, and apparently its supposed to be easier to digest. Also as others have mentioned its normal for newborns to struggle with bm....peanut had issues as well and my midwives recommended a few things that worked for us.

1st - when you notice your baby is struggling with a bm move his legs like he's riding a bike
2nd - about 30 minutes after he eats massage his tummy with your hand in the shape of a S...its supposed to helps things move down

Re: best formula?

i had tried almost every formula similac ,s26 gold, bebelac , aptamil but nothing suited my baby either she constipated or had stomach upset so finally she settled on NAN my experience wth it is v good :) n honestly every baby is different it actually depends on the baby body one formula tht suits ur baby not necessarily suit other baby

Re: best formula?

My baby had a lot of poo problem when he was born. It actually started maybe when he 2 weeks.. he was home. I took him to ER too one time when he was in a lot pain. Doctors say as long as baby's poo is not hard its all good. Like someone mentioned, its normal for babies to get used to the pooing experience. Your baby is doing very good by pooing twice a day. One time my son didn't poo for three days. We got very very worried. So my husband asked his doctor what the problem could be, he said just make sure he is hydrated and as long as he passes soft stools its all good. No doctor would recommend you change formula this fast. Whatever he is having is good. Your baby needs to be breastfed as much as you can do it. It'll help him immensly. My baby was fed Similac (same one Sahar mentioned) in hospital so we just continued with it. Doctor never once said its the formula that caused constipation, and honestly I did everything the doctor told me to do, ever since then my baby poos regularly. I think pretty much every mom worries about baby's poop since we have no experience. Its all good.. musturdy, green, brown.. all colors.. lol.. as long as its soft!

Re: best formula?

yup

Re: best formula?

omg, so i tried switching him over to goodstart and maybe i did it wrong (i just started giving him goodstart instead of enfamil a+) and maybe there's a different method to it, but he got SO upset. his tummy got crampy and he cried and i called every nurse helpline there was (all useless, btw, with telehealth ontario leading the pack, and the toronto public health nurse advising me to just "hold him" and how you can't spoil a three week old baby (well wtf do you think i'm doing while my baby cries, and what does that have to do with his cramps and the formula change?? good Lord. stupid woman.). anyway, i just went right back to enfamil a+ and it took a few feeds, but he's fine now, thank goodness. most harrowing experience so far! whew. i keep reading how nestle goodstart is the best formula because its the most researched and the whey protein is partially broken down so its easier to digest blah blah blah, but man, he likes enfamil a+, he's pooping regularly, etc., so thats what he's getting.

Re: best formula?

Awe isn't it scary when your baby is hurting and everybody seems to be incompetent....i'm glad he's doing better.

Re: best formula?

^ tell me about it! what is the point of a helpline if all they do is ask 10,000 questions then refer you to the closest ER?

i'm really relieved he's doing well too, Alhamdulillah!

Re: best formula?

glad his tummy is better!

Re: best formula?

This probably isn't much help cos I'm in the UK but here the 3 most popular brands of formula are Cow & Gate, Aptamil and SMA. I used Cow & Gate and didn't have any problems but I've heard Aptamil is also very good but not much different from C&G as they are sister companies.SGC are you giving him water or fennel tea too? That will definitely help and make pooping easier xxx

Re: best formula?

just gripe water... and once he had sugar water at the doctor's. he loved that!

Re: best formula?

Hey I was brought up on SMA! Or so I am told!
