The best time to get a cell phone in US is December where all the companies come up with the best deals ever. This year I am hunting for a good family plan.
Suggestions are most welcome.
I have Verizon, and I pay 20 bucks for the extra line. Sprint charges (I believe) 10 bucks but with their Anytime Minutes/$ ratio, they come out to be the same. AT&T was also same. So it all boils down to the coverage in your area, and which carrier offers the best coverage. Cingular offers roll-over mins which is cool, if you get decent coverage from them. Here they are pathetic... not sure about where you are.
And this is an especially good season to get a cellphone deal because numbers are now portable, and each company wants to add more customers. Beware, though that they are all trying to lock you in with 1- or 2-year agreements. Check, if they have 14-30 days satisfactiuon guarantee. So, if you find the service coverage is not good, you can return the phone and select another carrier. Verizon and Cingular both have it. I think Sprint also offers that guarantee.
I like the free Sprint to Sprint calling feature .. my calls to my brother or for that matter anyone who has a Sprint phone are absolutely free.. anytime of the day or night..
Well Unlimited mobile to mobile is standard with many Verizon plans too (esp. family share). I haven't tested Verizon's push-to-talk thingie yet, but those on Nextel rave about it.

At our company we tested out the Verizon walkie-talkie thing and it didn't really work out. Verizon is really trying to get to all the markets and really pushing them selves hard, but not quite succeeding.
I personally have the T-Mobile family plan. $60 for 800 mnt, free wkends/nghts and free TM-to-TM (most of my family/friends are on TM). so its pretty much free. And the roaming is really free. I've tried it from all corners of the US and never got charged a penny for roaming or long distance. (not to include international roaming).
